Chapter 12
I was speechless. I had unknowingly helped two people of MUSIKK. So then the people behind me must have been the rest of them. All my sadness and despair disappeared and turned into confusion and idiocy (which in my opinion, I’d prefer rather than sadness).
“Yuya,” Matsumoto replied, “you know her?”
“Yeah,” Yuya answered, “she helped us find our way here.”
“Oh, really? Well, since she was kind to us, then we should be kind to her.”
Shuji Matsumoto walked off stage and towards me. When I saw that he was getting closer to me, I quickly hid my face under my hair and made my head droop even lower. But it didn’t work.
When he was close to me, he bent down and leaned on his arms, which were on his knees. He put his face directly under mine.
“Wah!” he screamed, “Ryuu! You really scared her! She’s been crying a lot!”
The fact that Matsumoto was so close to me made me jump backwards, causing me to trip over the chair and fall to the ground.
“Eh! Gomen!” Matsumoto replied, “We umm… come ina… peace soup…No hurt… you… promise, okay?”
I looked up at Matsumoto from the floor. He was holding his hands up like the way a criminal does to show they surrendered. He looked really funny, so funny that I actually smiled.
“Ah! She smiled!” he said cheerfully. Then he looked back at me, “Everything be…goodo?”
“You, idiot!” Yuya screamed, “She knows Japanese!”
“Eh?! Seriously?” Matsumoto looked back down at me with wide eyes.
The way he looked was honestly so cute. I didn’t mean to embarrass him, but I didn’t mean for a lot of things to happen that day. So the next thing to happen would make sense if I said I didn’t mean to do it-I started to laugh.
When I started to laugh, Matsumoto looked at me with a kind smile. He reached out his hand to me and I took it, allowing him to help me up. He didn’t let go of my hand afterwards. Instead, he led me to the stage.
When I reached the stage, Matsumoto let go of my hand. I found myself being stared at by five pairs of eyes.
“Shit, Ryuu,” Yuya commented, “You really DID scare her!”
“I told you she looks awful…” Miura whispered to Yuya, which led to Yuya smacking him at the back of the head.
“It doesn’t matter! You still don’t say that directly to a girl!”
Having five very attractive men judge the way I looked made me nervous. I became self-conscious about a lot of things-my hair, my clothes, the way I smelled-but I knew it was no use. I couldn’t do anything to fix myself up unless I was at home.
Yuya looked at my hands, which were clenched tightly at my sides. He then walked over to me and smiled.
“Don’t worry,” he said, “Big brother Yuya will take care of you.” He walked towards me and swung his arm around my shoulder.
My heart was beating like mad. A MUSIKK member is hugging me! I thought to myself. Everything was so overwhelming. The room was beginning to spin and I felt like I was going to faint. I decided to close my eyes.
“What’s your name?” Miura asked.
I opened my eyes and quickly stepped backwards. Miura did the same thing Matsumoto did to me, where his face was directly under mine. It was too close for comfort and therefore made me really nervous.
“J-Jennifer…” The nervousness overpowered my voice and made me say my name quieter than I intended it to be. But because of the short distance that was between Miura and I, Miura was able to hear it perfectly.
“Kawaiii~” he whined. I began to blush. “Ne ne, Jennifer-chan, why are you here? You know, no one’s supposed to be here.”
A warm feeling came over me. It was nice. I felt like I could confide and trust Miura because his smile gave me warmth. It made me feel calm. I took a deep breath and cleared my throat.
“I…” I began to speak. My throat wasn’t dry anymore and my heart wasn’t trying to jump out of my chest. “I’m… I’m sorry…”
Miura withdrew his face and stood up straight. “Take your time…” he said with a smile. He put his hand on my back and stood on the opposite side of where Yuya was standing near me.
I took another deep breath and began to speak, clearly. “I’m truly… very sorry. I didn’t intend to come here but…” I quickly shut my mouth. I didn’t want to tell them that I was chased down the streets, that I was nearly raped. I wasn’t ready to re-live it yet. “I didn’t mean to interrupt you, honest.” My eyes went to Ryuu, who’s back happened to be facing me. I looked back down at my feet.
“I didn’t know anyone was here… I just came here to sit down… but… if I really disturbed you guys, then… I’ll go quietly to the police. I won’t resist, promise.”
I put my hands up, looking like they were ready to be handcuffed. The pain in my chest had come back and I was beginning to cry.
My mom’s going to disown me… I’ll never be trusted again… My life is ruined… were all the thoughts that were going through my mind. I began to sniffle again. Miura and Yuya probably noticed because they started to pat my back and rub my shoulders.
“Ryuu…” Yuya said, “She didn’t really mean any harm… you’re the one who brought up the discussion about the police getting involved. What are you going to do?”
Ryuu clicked his tongue again and took a deep breath. He began to quickly brush his fingers through his hair, back and forth.
“Tsk! This is so troublesome!” he said.
“I’m sorry…” I began to say, “I’m honestly very sorry…” Tears were beginning to fall. Then Ryuu turned around, but his hand was still brushing through his hair, yet he didn’t look at me. Instead, he looked off into some random distance.
“Look,” he said, “I was just kidding, okay? I…I’m sorry too. It’s just that, I’m mad that we didn’t get any work done and you didn’t come out right away. So the police was the best thing I could think of to make you come out.”
“What?” I silently said. I didn’t intend for anyone to hear me ask that, it just slipped out. The pain in my chest went away again but my tears still came. But these tears weren’t of sadness. They were of happiness and relief.
“Eh?! Why are you still crying?!” Ryuu complained, “I said I was sorry! Don’t cry, please!”
“Ryuu…” Uebo commented, “You’re an idiot.”
Matsumoto approached me and did the same thing he did to me before he dragged me to the stage. God! These Japanese men loved to put their faces next to yours (Not like it was a bad thing though…)! There I was, in a little group hug with Miura on my right, Yuya on my left, and Matsumoto in front of me. Thank god I was crying-I could blame my red cheeks from crying.
“Just ignore those two scary men back there,” Matsumoto pointed to Uebo and Ryuu, “Just listen to me and Yuya only, we’ll take care of you, ne?”
I nodded and gave a small smile as I began to wipe away my tears.
“Don’t forget about me! I’ll take care of you too!” Miura jumped in.
Yuya then gave a sharp look at Miura, “How can you take care of her if you can’t take care of yourself? YOU’RE the one who got US lost!”
“Yuya-kun is so mean~” Miura whined.
I gave out a small giggle. Miura really did make me feel better-Miura and Yuya combined. They were so funny. They almost acted like a lovey-dovey couple who’d fight over the most stupid things.
“So I see you’re feeling better,” Matsumoto stood up straight and patted my head. I nodded. Matsumoto asked another question, “So how’d you find us here? Are you a fan of ours? Do you know who we are?”
I began to play with my fingers in front of me. I nodded to Matsumoto’s second question and with a timid voice, I said, “Yeah, I know who you are. You’re MUSIKK, a Japanese group that belongs to Yume Entertainment and… I’m a huge fan.” Thinking that they think I might be some sort of stalker, I quickly backed up why I was here, “But… I didn’t know you were here. Honest, I just… needed a safe place to be alone…” My voice started to get quieter, the pain in my chest was starting to form again. So I changed the subject.
“On a more cheerful note, why are you guys here, in Canada?”
Ryuu answered my question with a serious voice, indicating that answering my question was also troublesome. His arms were crossed and he was leaning on the wall. He ended up avoiding my gaze by looking off into the distance again. “We were reading people’s fanmail… and since Hayato could now speak some English, we actually gave the foreign fanmail a try. We were surprised by how many people in North America knew about us, so we decided to come here. We chose Canada through a lottery system, so now we’re planning a concert here. Jimmy, the owner of YE, didn’t like our idea of an overseas concert, so we came here on our own-no security, nothing. We figured we’d be okay. But Jimmy is letting us do the concert, if we arrange everything ourselves. He’ll take care of the tickets and such, but we have to personally go look at the stage and plan. So here we are. There’s no official news about the concert because we weren’t sure whether or not we could handle arranging this concert ourselves. So we’re keeping it a surprise, but I guess it’s no longer a surprise anymore…”
Ryuu then looked at me through the corner of his eyes. He looked like he was glaring at me and it made me jump and feel guilty at the same time. He looked mad at me. The pain returned.
“I’m… sorry…” I said, trying to hold back the tears, which was a failed attempt. I started to sniffle and make sounds again. I felt Miura and Yuya patting my back.
“Eh?!” Ryuu’s voice was full of surprise and had lost all hints of seriousness. “Why are you crying again?!” Ryuu jumped off the wall and was debating whether or not he should walk towards me. He then clicked his tongue again and gave out a frustrated sigh while at the same time, brushed his fingers through his hair.
Then a different voice was heard. It wasn’t Uebo’s, Matsumoto’s, Miura’s, Yuya’s nor Ryuu’s. It was someone else’s. It then clicked in my mind that one member of MUSIKK was still missing.
“You really don’t know why, Ryuu…?” said the voice, which was from behind the stage. After a few seconds, the man stepped out from behind the stage and the darkness, and into the light. That man was Hayato Kiritani.
As he stepped into the light, he maintained eye contact with me. His gaze was nerve-wracking. When he stared into my eyes, it felt like he could see into my soul, like I could hide nothing from him. It made me blush and feel uncomfortable. I quickly snapped out of his gaze and timidly looked at the floor but every now and then, I’d glance up at him to see if he was still looking at me. He then gave me a small crooked smile and then turned to Ryuu.
“Ryuu… she’s crying because you scare the hell out of her… that’s why.”
