Eslite has opened in Causeway Bay. My first impression of the bookstore wasn't great. It was noisy and smelled of oily French fries that wafted from restaurants above the three-storey branch. Moreover, Chinese and English titles were stacked together under the same subject headings. To me, it was rather inconvenient to search for good reads.
I still prefer Cosmos and Commercial Press bookstores for the ambience and browsing Chinese titles. People are there to read, browse and buy reading materials instead of chatting loudly with their companions or on their mobile phones.
The score for the trip is a fully illustrated book that depicts how one can decorate a home with bookshelves and his favourite titles. The other interesting book that I got is a compilation of erotic Chinese classics. I didn't know that Mao Zedong was a lecherous old man who engaged in mass orgies! The extent some people went through to portray a righteous image when they were the ones who committed the most perverse acts.
I love to buy Chinese magazines just to admire the latest fashion collections from European designers. The best place to buy them is from the HK airport that offers airport promotional prices. For example, Marie Claire costs 10HKD and comes with a pouch. The magazines that I purchased from Relay cost less that the same ones I saw on the streets in HK that didn't come with freebies.
As for English reading materials, they definitely cost more in HK than in SG.
