Star Trek the Star Trek

So, since we couldn't see Star Trek: Into Darkness, we came home and rented (inorite??) Star Trek the Star Trek instead. Which I had never seen. So.

I didn't like Sarek or Sulu. Also why was Sarek british? No other Vulcans are british. As for Sulu well...I dunno. It wasn't that he was different from proper Sulu, since Chekhov was also very different from proper Chekhov but was completely adorable. I just. I dunno.

I loved Captain Pike. He was fantastic.

So Uhura has mad linguist skills now. I...approve. (Really, how could I not?)

But okay, that movie was...good. Surprisingly good. I enjoyed it greatly. Although Nero was wholly uncompelling. And also kind of Khan? Like, he was totally Khan. He's all like "this thing blew up and it destroyed my favorite planet and killed my wife and now GRRR I GET YOU KIRK SPOCK." We were like "what, are you Khan?" To which the answer was apparently "yes" because not three minutes later he was inserting those Seti Alpha V ear worms into people's brains.

No, Nero. You are not Khan. Go home. (oooh- too soon?)

But anyway, it makes me wonder, if Nero has Khan's backstory, whose backstory will Khan have? Right?? Well, to be fair, even after only the first 15 minutes of Into Darkness, and without him actually having been, strictly speaking, introduced yet, it's clear that Khan's backstory is totally different. And involves Mickey? Okay.

Okay, so - and I'll try to make this the last time I harp on this - if Vulcan has been destroyed, how are Vulcans supposed to get on with their stupidly complex burial customs? Maybe they'll build some new stairs of destiny or whatever. But isn't this presumably going to be a plot point in Into Darkness?

This did not in any way prevent us from making "here, hold onto my Katra for me" jokes for the entire move. And especially when they're like "well, this mission could be super duper fatal. If it is, tell Uhura- " to hold onto my katra for me, and try to get it back to Vul- aw crap never mind. I think seeing Search for Spock has utterly ruined me for Vulcans for the time being. Frickin Vulcans.

I do love me some Vulcan bullies though. Heh heh heh.

I think my favorite part of the movie was when they find Scotty though. Not just because Simon Pegg was brilliant in the role, but because of Spock Prime's reaction. He's all "fascinating" - but you can tell that what he means is "ZOMG IT'S TOTALLY SCOTTY!" Which is just kind of beautiful to behold. Also, his general attitude of "preservation of the timeline what preservation of the timeline?"

And I gotta say, that last scene with both of Spocks. Was fantastic. And, correct me if I'm wrong, but this is what I heard:

Little Spock: So. Better go repopulate Vulcan.
Big Spock: No you should go be in Starfleet. I'll repopulate Vulcan :D
Little Spock: ...why?
Big Spock: Because I totally ship it
Little Spock: wait ship what?
Big Spock: Oh...you'll find out :D

But yes. In the course of about three lines, Spock Prime offered to repopulate the planet basically by himself, admitted to being a total Kirk/Spock shipper, and then said that saying "Live Long and Prosper" to his younger self would be a bit too self-serving. It was about the best thing ever. Spock Prime is in ur universe, messin with ur continuity. Aaaaaaand...loving it. (But seriously, he's like "I'm so full of lies. You should learn to be full of lies too, young me. It's awesome. You should totally try it.")

And apparently they correctly decided that you can't go wrong ending a Star Trek movie with Leonard Nimoy voicing over the intro. Ayyyyyup.

But yeah. I liked it. Rather a lot really. :D
