*sigh* I never get to see the cool stuff. Big honking near-earth asteroid is making a house call and it's over the wrong side of the planet from me :( Alas.
So guys, in case you haven't heard, there's a ~50 m asteroid passing within about 17,200 miles of earth tonight. It should be visible from most of Europe, Asia and Africa. To provide a sense of scale, that's closer than our geo-stationary satellites. (WHICH IS SO COOL!) I think
NASA tv will be following it today - I need to look that up since it sounds like a great way to pass an afternoon. It's not going to hit us, or the moon, but maybe it'll clear up some of our space junk? Who knows. Only thing for it is to wait and see!
At least there's a good chance I'll get to see the PANSTARRS comet. Whee!
(best thing I've seen so far on the internet about it: "Asteroids: Nature's way of asking how the space program is doing")
