Easter Photos

Well, this is only a week and a bit late. But then, Easter lasts for seven weeks (as opposed to six weeks of Lent - as Fr. Larry says: "we are a people of Hope.")

We were joined for Easter by my utterly lovely Aunt Victoria, who is perhaps the very nicest person ever. And then we cooked and cooked and cooked. She made us her awesome Tassahara bread and helped me roast red peppers (which I think are the best peppers I've ever made). I started my sauce on Friday (when I couldn't actually taste it) and it ended up being just enough for the two lasagne. On Saturday we went to the Italian Store and picked up five kinds of olives for our antipasti and fabulous ricotta. That evening Jon & Christin came over to dye eggs (I made Mars!) and we all went out for Vietnamese afterwards.

Here are pictures of the things we cooked:

Lasagne in the making! We made two. We finished the second one...yesterday. Aunt Victoria suggested we precarmalize the onions, which was genius - but I think what ended up being best was just lots and lots of good ricotta.

This is my Easter Egg Ring, representing the Crown of Thorns. I can never get it to rise properly. In spite of not rising properly, it didn't end up a total brick this time, so I think I can officially declare it my most successful egg bread ever. I'm especially pleased that it ended up having exactly five eggs in it - five is an important number, representing, among other things, the five wounds of Christ, the five virtues, and the five senses. Also, it just looks cool.

Dinner is served - bon appetit! That's the lasagne fresh out of the oven, and all our antipasti and fresh bread and whatnot. We also made an awesome salad, which is sadly out of frame. Oh, and there were a couple of sausages, which had been flavoring for the sauce. This dinner ended up including seven different kinds of cheese:

Roquefort (antipasto)
Manchego (antipasto)
Provolone pecante (antipasto)
Peccorino Romano (lasagne; topping)
Mozzarella (lasagne)
Ricotta (lasagne; pizza rustica)
Mascarpone (canoli)

Speaking of canoli...

That is Joel-Henry's homemade canoli. They were delicious. Because what is dinner without dessert?

Behold, the crowning achievement - our traditional easter pie, Pizza Rustica. It's a lemony ricotta pie with whole wheat berries. It is unlike anything else. We did these neat designs on top after the traditional cross-hatching totally failed. Seriously, does anyone here know how to successfully crosshatch a pie? So yeah, this was the second (and more attractive) of two, which is why we still have a bit left. Delicious!

Jon, Christin, and Rachel joined us for Easter Dinner, and on the whole it was a rousing success. Happy Easter All, and Happy Pascha for you Orthodox folks!

Now is Christ risen from the dead
And become the firstfruits of them that slept!
