The Son of Neptune

Sop. I finished The Son of Neptune today. It...was basically what I expected it to be. Yay! Although it seems to have been the least road-trippy of the books thus far, since Alaska just doesn't work that way. ALSO THERE WAS PERCY. I love Percy - he's so dumb!

Speaking of Percy and his dumbth, this trilogy is doing a good job with the ambiguous titles. Although the intended referent was obvious, "the son of neptune" could, in fact, be applied to every heroic male individal in the book. Except maybe the Elephant, but I'm not taking bets. And at least one villainous one.

I'm really enjoying the whole Greek vs. Roman thing. OMG ROMANS. They're super cute. But they're doing a really good job not saying one way is Just Better than the other. Even though, you know, pretty much every character in the book thinks so. Also - Mars! Waaaaay nicer guy than Ares. Who knew? But yeah, the gimmick is good fun.

I... am still way too amused by who all turns out to be descended from Neptune. Percy was...less amused.

It occurs to me that Percy is pretty much the only character in the series who has a good relationship with both of his parents. Like...Poseidon is a really nice guy. Pretty much everyone else has all this angst, and kind of resents their godly parent. But Percy, although he does fret every time he discovers another non-human brother, really really enjoys being the Son of Poseidon. It's...nice.

Also, Hazel is basically Piper mk.2. Not sure what's up with that.

books, percy jackson
