The Highlanders

It's not often that I get to watch "new" Doctor Who episodes. Hence, running across a reconstruction of "The Highlanders" on YouTube was somewhat exciting. However, after the first episode, the sound quality was so bad (and out of sync with the images for most of one segment) that the episode as a whole made no kind of sense. Whatsoever. Some observations:

The second doctor (particularly in his early era) is flipping weird. And obsessed with hats. I've listened to a recording of "Power of the Daleks" in which he does nothing whatsoever to reassure his companions (Ben and Polly) as to his identity after the regeneration - he doesn't even make any assertions on that ground! This was more of the same.

For some reason the Doctor spends fully half the episode in drag. And then he dresses up as a soldier - with, apparently, a fake mustache. I thought Jon Pertwee was the "master of disguise" of the series.

It's Jamie! And he plays the bagpipes. While they're hiding from the redcoats. O...kay... But that is a really cute hat!

Why is the Doctor brandishing everybody in sight with guns? And physically overpowering them? Isn't that what Ben is for? (and why is he blowing people kisses!?)

The Doctor plays his recorder. This causes a prison riot. ???

I get the feeling Polly must be some kind of aristocrat. She keeps calling people peasants. That's not very nice of her.

Do they call Germans "frogs" too? The Doctor is pretending to be from Hannover...

This is actually somewhat reminiscent of "The Romans" - in that it is purely historical, and involves slaves on a ship. Although there seem to be some legal issues with that?

So is Ffinch helping them or not? And why? And how did they get out of the pit?

So we've got Charles Edward's hat, Charles Edward's standard, and Charles Edward's ring. So where is Bonnie Prince Charlie himself? And why does Colin McCluran have all these things?

The one scene we have actual footage for? The big fight on the ship. Let's hear it for Australian censorship!

So the Jacobites took over the ship...somehow? But they let the Doctor keep the ring? And Jamie stowed away in a wheelbarrow...for some reason?

They made this huge deal about the ring - guard it with your life, kinda thing. Okay. So - what happens to it? Does the Doctor keep it? Do they give it to the English? Jamie comes with them, so they're out of Scottish people - I'm so confused.

This episode basically confused the heck out of me. No more reconstructions for a while, I think.
