This theme brings back memories. ♥

I could see some elements of Koushiro at times, as was mentioned above...but overall the character I thought I would probably be leaning towards the most for you was Yamato, and that really hasn't changed! ♥ He does fit elements of the INTJ, a mix of The Analytical & The Independent Thinker types, Type 1, and I could see him fitting into the Distant Loner Soul personality type too (though also have the same issues with it as you did, as I don't think he could be described as insensitive or arrogant as the description makes it sound either).

Yamato can be distant, secretive (in the sense that he's private and doesn't really like talking about his personal life much), serious, and introverted. He's quiet unless he really feels he has to make a point and he has strong opinions that he won't hesitate to voice if he feels has to. He keeps to himself, but isn't necessarily withdrawn. He can be cynical, but he has a strong sense of justice. He tends to be more rational too...and can be logical, practical, and critical at times. He's collected and calm for the most part, but does have a "berserk button" at times (it's also somewhat easy to annoy him, but rather difficult to make him really angry...I think that only ever happened in a rare instances where something really extreme happened in the plot or he was worried about Takeru). He's cautious about most things, and can be rather apathetic about things...but if he feels strongly about something, he's very passionate about it. Once he becomes close to someone, he is extremely loyal and protective of them (as can be seen with his interactions with Takeru).

All of your Positive and Negative Traits could fit for Yamato throughout the series given his development, and how others would describe you (both from a first impression stance and once they've gotten to know you better) could also fit rather well for him too for the most part. He's a pessimistic realist at times in the story, is cautious, calm, and cynical. He has a leader-type personality but prefers leading from the background when he can as well, and he definitely thinks for himself and is pretty stubborn in group situations too. He's more introverted, is pretty independent, is persistent for the most part, and is confident but is not necessarily confident in everything.

"I'd also like to be able to get over some things that happened in the past much faster. I hold onto things I shouldn't for way too long for it to be healthy for me."...this part actually fits for Yamato rather well given what happened in the past with his parents and everything from what I remember (it's been awhile since I watched the series, but I remember it being rather hard for him to talk to his mother at times given how the divorce was handled...and he seemed a lot more comfortable with himself later on once he was able to move past that, so I could see that response being something he'd agree with). I could see him sharing your thoughts on conflict, and I could see him wanting to take part in the "world-altering battle" for similar reasoning too. His role during fights often was rather offensive in nature, though he also did provide tactical support at times given how calmly he could react to the situations the group was in...so I could see your response to the combat roles fitting rather well for Matt too. Matt is a mature, logical, rational, loyal, calm, capable, and independent person...which is how I view you too, so I think he's a really good fit for you out of the cast! :D
