The Louisiana sun burned through the fog that still floated over the water outside, showering a hardwood floor with golden rays of honey suckle. The room was very obviously a teenaged girl’s, for there were shades of purple and red as well as remnants of childhood memories. A teddy bear, a raggedy-Anne doll, and a headless giraffe as well as a beaten stuffed chicken, all shoved into one corner.
The bed sheets were a deep purple with a lighter shade of swirls that twisted around the fabric in an elaborate decoration. One pillow was lazily discarded on the floor, while the other was hidden beneath the mountain of blankets that covered the still sleeping body beneath it.
Crystal could feel the hot rays of 6 AM hitting her face through. She hadn’t set her alarm. She’d been too lazy, and didn’t really want to go to school today anyway. If she had set it, it would have already been laying on the floor in pieces - it wasn’t the first alarm clock to crumble beneath her claws. This was also another day in Crystal’s life, while important, it was another day. She curled up into a tighter ball beneath the blankets ignoring the irritating thought that continued to tell her that she had to get up.
There was a creak in the hall way by her door. A creaky floor board that usually signaled the entrance of her mother, but it wasn’t followed the sing song tone that asked for the stubborn feral to get out of bed. Crystal rose her head slightly, waiting for another sound. When nothing came she laid back down in her bed and hugged her pillow to her head, content to fall back asleep and ignore the day all together. Why? Because she could.
But the sensation of someone else in her bed made her flail, as did the feeling of two dark arms wrapping around her waist and a kiss on her cheek. She squealed, more like a cat than a girl and was suddenly falling from the ceiling onto the living room couch with unflattering grunt atop a large boulder of a boy with a buzz cut.
“Happy birthday, baby girl.” Grinned the boy beneath her, large hands resting against her back. Her face burned a bright red, and she pushed herself from JoJo, stumbling to the floor and feeling the same dark arms wrap around her and kiss her face again. She struggled and stumbled into another set of arms, then another.
This repeated until she was thrown into the love seat with kisses, hugs, and happy birthday wishes. Her Aunt Meredith was already in tears, sobbing about how old Crystal was and how old she was getting and how unfair it was that Crystal only got prettier and she got uglier. Crystal’s face seemed stuck on embarrassed and burned like hell fire, then finally; salvation appeared in the form of her blond haired and blue eyed mother holding a white box with a large pink bow on top of it.
She smiled sweetly at her, eyes welling with the same happy tears Crystal knew so well and knelt before her like a noble before her queen.
“Happy 15th birthday, Princess. I got you something special. Just like I promised.”
Crystal looked from her mother, then to the faces surrounding her. All beaming, grinning, and winking with a secret Crystal seemed to have forgotten. The bow shimmered like a pearl in the light, and the box felt like snake skin.
She removed the bow and placed it aside, where Jordan promptly placed the still sticky bow on his head. Crystal would have snatched it off his head in irritation if she hadn’t given a loud gasp of surprise at the precious yellow gem that was hidden within the white box. A yellow diamond about the size of a quarter and the thickness of two fingers, hanging from a silver and white diamond studded necklace.
“Mama!” Crystal gasped and took the precious gem out of its case, “Mom! Its - it’s beautiful! When did you get it? How did you get it?!”
Her mother shook her head, and placed a hand over Crystal’s as she clasped the Canary diamond tightly.
“I said I’d get you something special when you were fifteen. And you’ve done so well. Don’t you worry about the how. It’s yours now, baby. Try it on.”
Crystal hesitated, wanting so very much to dart upstairs and hide the gem somewhere before something terrible happened to it. But JoJo’s mother beat her and snatched up the gem, pulling Crystal’s hair from around her neck placing on the necklace. It sat heavy on Crystal’s neck, and the stone fell almost perfectly in the hollow between Crystal’s collar bones. Meredith gave a deep gasp, and clasped a hand to her chest, dramatically.
“Oh, child - it suits you so well! Look at dat thang sparkle!”
“It matches your eyes.” Jojo peeped sitting beside Crystal, and placing a thick arm around her affectionately. Crystal’s cheeks began to burn again and she looked down at the gem holding it between two fingers.
“Thank you, Mama.”
