Two entries for the price of one~
First off, I shall be discussing one of the best graphic novels I've read in a long time.
The Pride of Baghdad written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Niko Henrichon story is based on a real life event where four lions escaped the Baghdad Zoo in 2003. I'm an extremely big fan of Vaughan due to his work on Y: The Last Man and Runaways and i've heard extremely great things about Ex-Machina but I haven't had the chance to read that yet. Vaughan does a great job crafting a story of the cost of freedom while remaining neutral on America's involvement in the war. Vaughan knows when to show and this is where Henrichon's beautiful art comes in, it gets the point accross without being overly wordy. Actually, the book is worth the $20 just for Henrichon's art and I'm looking for his other graphic novel work. You should all go and read it or I'll punch you, it's that great.
Yesturday I hit up a Xiu Xiu show, two pictures and rambling after
I decided to go see Xiu Xiu last night, it's been about a year since I saw them in DC and even though I'm seeing them again next month I decided to go. I ended up missing my exit and having fun trying to find the venue. I ended up parking several blocks away and well the walk was extremely fun. I'm annoyed since I could have saved $8 for parking since the place had it's own but that's what I get for not knowing my way around the city. The show stared about half an hour late so I was able to see all three acts. The opener was an artist named BARR and he was just a vocalist, he had the music in a bag which was hooked up to the sound system. He was definately something else but I enjoyed it. The second act was Xiu Xiu's drummer (yes, they are now a trio). The guy is extremely talented but his music did nothing for me. Xiu Xiu was great as always, they had a good mix from their current work and their older stuff. I didn't have a great spot so I didn't bother taking many pictures.
This is where I'm regreting going, I had directions coming back from the venue but I did not park close to it so I got lost trying to find my way to the interstate. When I finally did it ended up being a detour and I ended missing the street where I was supposed to turn. After being pissed off for a while I finally got some directions and was able to find my way back.
