I want to know why I always begin by writing my conclusion before I write any of my argument. This essay is really ambiguous towards its own meaning and I don't think I've really got it right.
It's talking about "social function" and I took that to mean something contributing towards a sort of community spirit/purpose before I realised that everything contributes to that and that that makes the question obsolete because "does greek tragedy have a social function" implies the answer "yes and this is what it is" rather than "yes, everything is a social function". So now I'm thinking maybe "social function" means "is there a purpose other than political/religious"..."yes, it is pleasure and this is how it is created...."
I'm trying to avoid democracy completely because all these scholars seem to have a different idea of what it entails, whether it means that it's something to do with the polis and its citizens, or just the idea of equality and debate....and the mix up between what the difference is between contemporary civic ideology and democratic ideology and the polis. Which to me are all the same thing, but to one author in particular there is a vast difference which he doesn't bother to explain to his simple reader.
And really, though I don't really understand any of these guys, I feel like criticising them all in my essay for being complete twats and looking far too deeply into meanings that aren't there and that I now have to write about. Especially Griffin, he's the biggest and most bumptuous arse of the lot. He likes creating an argument just to piss on someone. Well Griffin, guess what, I'm going to piss on you and your argument so there!
Ahem.
I have to go to the library and return ma reserve book which will take important time out of the essay I'm not writing. And will also mean I'll bump into all those people who are so relieved because they've just handed in their essays on time, well fuck you guys is all I have to say.
I'm tempted to just go over in my pjs.I actually might, is that bad?I have two hours before I have to worry about that. So tired. And the light in here is rubbish, I got very little sleep even though I decided to leave the essay, I still had essay sleep of tense, wake up every 15 minutes snoozing. Which means ofcourse that I'm on TOP FORM right now, mumbling to myself about Griffin and function and social and stuff stuff stuff.
I'm pretty certain I'm not going to be able to cover the word-count. 3500 I THINK NOT. But we'll see if I'm going to put any Sophocles and Euripides in there just to fuck with it a bit. Technically it's not in the essay title, but I feel that the whole course was centered around Soph and Euri and I should make a honorary mention of Oedipus and Bacchae.
Can one write a greek essay without having any greek?! :-s
