Happy birthday Megan!

Title: A Lesson
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: I don't know any of these people, and the following is all fiction.

Dr. Zanetti and newly graduated medical student Dr. Burdisso were in the lab together. The former was showing the latter some of his work:

“So, you see, Dr. Burdisso -”

“Please, call me Nico,” the new doctor smiled pleasantly.

Dr. Zanetti smiled back. “OK, Nico. But most medical school graduates prefer to be called ‘Doctor’.”

“Ah, that’s too formal!” Nico waved the suggestion away. “Anyway, it should be me who shows you respect, not the other way around.” Nico glanced at his companion.

“I can see they taught you well in Medical School!” Zanetti chuckled and patted Nico’s back.

* * *
Several weeks passed. Dr. Zanetti - or Javi, as he was known privately - had grown fond of Dr. Burdisso. The young one had a certain innocence, a passion for the job that was not yet tainted, that seemed to bring life to all those around him. Javi sometimes even wondered how he ever passed the monotonous days before Nico’s arrival.

Nico himself did not notice any extra attention from Dr. Zanetti. During the first few days, he had accidentally knocked over a stack of medication boxes arranged by the respected doctor. After threats of suspension if no one came forward, Nico had been forced by the other interns to confess. Since that incident, every time Dr. Zanetti called or paged him, the poor intern thought he was in trouble, and was extra attentive. Javi was so impressed by his responsiveness that what at first had been infrequent calls for errands became a stress reliever. Seeing that face calmed him immensely.

One day, Javi visited the top floor of the library, searching for a particular book about hormones. He wanted to pinpoint the physical cause of his …craving (if he could call it that). A familiar figure caught his eye as he walked past a row of books. He stopped and backtracked, muttering, “Speak of the devil!”

The doctor straightened his attire and hair, cleared his throat, and pretended to browse the shelves as he walked closer to the younger doctor. Eventually, he heard what he had been anticipating:

“Dr. Zanetti! How good to see you!”

Javi looked up, “Oh, Dr. Burdisso, is that you? What a coincidence, finding you here!” He shook Nico’s extended hand. “And you were right, by the way, about this calling each other ‘Doctor’ business. It is too formal!”

“Well…” Nico smiled, shrugging slightly.

“You can call me ‘Javi’. But not around the other interns, OK?” He slapped the young doctor’s arm and smiled.

“Oh, is that what the ‘J’ stands for?” Nico took on a very becoming thoughtful look, “I always wondered,” he explained, and his cheeks burned slightly at the thought of sounding stupid.

“What are you reading?” Javi changed the subject.

“Oh, nothing, just browsing.”

Despite Nico’s attempt to hide the book, with one glance the experienced eyes found out the subject of the book. It was the exact same one Javi had had in mind.

The young intern was not sure what to do when the elder doctor got closer to him and started commenting on the book. He took a couple of steps back, agreeing with everything the other said. I’m a doctor now, he thought, I shouldn’t let my urges get the better of me. I can control them. Maybe it was Nico’s wishful thinking, but Dr. Zan- Javi continued to get closer. It wasn’t clear what his intentions were, and Nico certainly didn’t want to misinterpret them, so he decided to let Javi guide him.

The two were about an arms’ length away from the wall when Nico gathered up the courage to look up into Javi’s eyes. Only their breaths could be heard for some time. The tension was building. Javi ignored his head’s warning signs and went with his heart for once, cradling Nico’s head in his arms and kissing his warm lips. Nico dropped the book with a thud, narrowly missing both pairs of feet.

It felt so right that both doctors forgot their age and hierarchy differences. They seemed perfect for each other.

The liplock continued until the beep of a pager brought the two down to Earth. Javi groaned and glanced down at his pager, stopping the annoying beep.

“It wasn’t important. Let’s continue,” Javi said quickly.

“But who was it? They might need you,” Nico replied, taken aback at Dr. Zanetti’s lack of responsibility. “This is unlike you, Doctor! You’re so focused when you teach…” Nico’s voice trailed off.

“Oh, you want me to teach? All right, let’s go inside this meeting room and I’ll give you a lesson in human anatomy.”

As he was being pushed inside, Nico stammered, “But-but are you sure about this?”

“Of course! Trust me, this’ll help you more than a whole night of studying! Ever heard of learning by doing?”
