Michaelle Jean is Canada's Governor-General, the Queen's representative in Canada. She came here as a refugee from Haiti when she was a child. Her daughter was adopted from Haiti. Her statement on the earthquake left me in tears, just to warn you, but
here it is anyway.
Some ways to help:
Unicef has an emergency fund set up, as does the
Red Cross. I linked to the Canadian sites for my fellow Canucks, because the Canadian government will match Canadian donations dollar for dollar.
Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders has 800 staff in Haiti, but -- and it seems this is the case with most organizations -- they can't contact everyone, and they're pulling their own staff out of the rubble. Medical personnel are up to their eyes at the best of times (our friend Nurse J worked in Haiti for a time). MSF has lost three of their aid centres to the quake and they're working out of tents in many areas, so obviously, they're going to need all the help they can get.
help_haiti is a pan-fandom fundraising initiative where you can offer up your talents for auction, or bid on someone else's work. Even if you aren't into fandom, there are auctions for food, crafty things, tarot readings...
ontd_startrek has a
Unicef USA fundraising page set up. If this isn't your fandom, check around, it's possible yours has a page, too. Supernatural fans raised $10,000 overnight. o_O
Something like 3/4 of the population of Haiti are small-scale subsistence farmers;
Heifer International is one of many organizations concentrating on longer-term support in the aftermath of the earthquake.
Hope this helps, in every respect. &hearts
