This guy is exactly why The Handmaid's Tale should be mandatory reading. He is completely missing the point: in fact, in missing the point, I think he highlights it. (The comments are largely reassuring, too, that we've come a long way since, say, the 80s -- see past posts about my own experience being in high school while the local bluenoses tried to ban books.)
For the record, I'm not a fan of Atwood's work. This book in particular has always scared the crap out of me (forget run-of-the-mill horror: my nightmares are about living in such a dystopia). And that is precisely why I think it's important. Especially now.
