Where were you...

Nov 05, 2008 11:05

When I was growing up, my mother said the seminal cultural moment was:  "Where were you when you heard Kennedy was shot?"

So let's update this for today--because we know where you were.  You were in front of a television:

"What channel were you watching when they announced Obama had taken VA/won to election?"

I was actually watching The Daily Show at that moment.  We had been flipping back and forth between NBC and Comedy Central, every time CC hit a commercial break we would go back to NBC's football-like scores at the bottom of the screen, peering eagerly as the vote totals went from McCain up by 10 thousand votes, to Obama up by less than a thousand votes....and then everytime we checked in the margin grew incrementally....

But the moment Fox and NBC called VA for Obama we missed, and so instead we saw Jon Stewart call VA for Obama....
....and then a minute later call the election for him as well.

I don't know, perhaps because i watched Stewart's defeated broadcast four years ago when Bush unbelievably won a second term, it felt good to see him announce this one.
