Spencer's Background:
Spencer Reid was born to Diana and William Reid of Goldenrod City in Johto and, no matter what anyone said, Diana Reid was not insane. People thought she was, but her studies into ancient culture weren't the searches of a madwoman. They were brilliant, and perhaps too accurate. When her son was only four, Diana Reid was at work, translating the runes in the Ruins of Alph. That was her last known location, but there, within the Ruins, she disappeared.
That year was difficult for William. His mother passed just after Diana's disappearance, and one of Spencer's young friends was found dead in the basement of his house. He waited for four years, but once Diana was officially declared dead, he picked up his son and his practice and moved. It wasn't just to Kanto. No, William took his son and moved to Unova.
Spencer wasn't the hardiest of boys. He got sick often and eventually took to wearing a scarf everywhere he went, especially in Nuvema, where it always seemed to be windy. He progressed quickly through school, mostly homeschooled, but spent quite a bit of time on the internet, doing his own amateur research into his mother's pet topics. He got in the habit of keeping journals of what he'd discovered, a scientist in his own way.
Between his health and his own researches, it was easy for his father to talk him out of going on a Pokemon journey when he was ten - and that didn't seem to be the practice in Unova, anyway. Instead, he waited until he was sixteen and had grown taller than his father and, much to his father's chagrin, hadn't cut his hair in years.
William still wasn't too happy with letting Spencer go, but rather than letting the local Professor give him a Pokemon, William presented his son with a "guard dog" of sorts - a young Lillipup that Spencer quickly named Ivan.
Aaron's Background:
Hoenn was a comparatively rural area, and a peaceful place to raise children - or it would be for most children. The Hotchners weren't, however, a normal couple. Aaron's father was abusive, and most of the Hotchners' neighbors knew it. Unfortunately, they tended to mind their own business and nobody interceded, no matter how many bruises both woman and son wore.
At the age of ten, Aaron was disallowed from starting a Pokemon journey. In the mind of his father, there were more important things than wandering around in the wilderness for no discernible reason. Aaron was expected to study instead, and he didn't have a choice.
He was thirteen when he met Haley Brooks. She had just moved to Lilycove City, and Aaron took the chance to show her around. They became fast friends, and soon she was his first girlfriend. Every moment he could be away from home, he was, and he spent all that time with Haley. It was easily the best two years in his life. But at fifteen, everything spiraled downward. His father, surprising all of them, died of cancer early in the year. One of his partners in law stepped in to try to take care of them, as his mother was early in a pregnancy, expecting Aaron's younger brother.
George Foyet seemed like a gift. They'd been afraid before, and while they could relax around George, things slowly shifted. George's rules were strict, and Aaron being out with Haley broke those rules. It was a swift spiral as George's and Aaron's personality clashed. It came to a head one night while, when out with Haley, Aaron spotted George ahead, a gleaming knife in his hand. Aaron was forced to watch while Foyet killed Haley and left him bleeding from one deep stab wound out in the shallow water off Lilycove Beach.
It was the last straw. Foyet fled and, after Aaron had finally healed, his mother moved them as far away as she could - off to Unova, where Aaron could even go on his Pokemon journey. He was fifteen when they arrived in Nuvema town, and found himself being offered the same courtesy he'd once offered Haley - as he was welcomed by the somewhat shy and very quiet Spencer Reid. They had things in common. Both had lost a parent, both were determined to set something right, and both were one year away from starting their Pokemon journey.
Aaron's mother didn't have a special Pokemon to give her son when the time came. She was busy taking care of Aaron's younger brother, Sean. But she gave him what little she could: a few older Pokeballs left over from her own journey years before, the map of Unova that she'd gotten when they moved, and a sturdy backpack that should serve him well. At last, he and Spencer were on their way; Spencer with his Lillipup and Aaron with his Snivy, both of them armed only with Pokedexes and willpower.
