Val scowled. She clicked IGNORE and this time turned her cellphone off. Flipping it close, she threw it at the other side of her bed, which wasn’t much, since her bed was practically as big as her body. Her glare strengthened tenfold.

He called again. For the seventh time that day. Why couldn’t he just get the picture? How many times had she already told him to stop? How many times had she already not answered his calls? And, lastly, how many times had she told him to just stay away?

She hated his stubbornness. He was so obsessive, too. Why couldn’t he be a little bit tamer? He was starting to really get into her nerves. Everything he did annoyed her, and he did a lot of things. He was just so….so damn infuriating!

Val ducked her head and clutched it with both hands. The noise of the computer and the whirring of the electric fan vibrated in her ears. She frowned heavily again. He was the reason she was here, and not in school.

She was grounded. Because he had to ‘tell the truth’ to his teacher. Of course, she hated lying, but why did he give in so quickly? He could keep it a secret from his parents, from her parents, but why not the teacher?

A sigh released itself and she bent her head lower to her knees. Her parents were a little too overprotective of her. They think that since she was just practically sixteen, she should only devotedly focus on studies, and nothing else. The rest would follow after she’d graduated. But of course, she couldn’t handle that, and she didn’t.

So now, she was in her room, waiting for her parents to lecture her when they get home. She was lucky she hadn’t gone to school, it wouldn’t have helped with her frustration.

She half-groaned and half-yelled.

She was angry with Ciel. But it shouldn’t have lasted long. She should’ve forgiven him by now. But when her friend advised for her to try to get to know him better, he only further angered her. He was so insane! He was so wild, so annoying, so stubborn, so…so…such a boy!

The voice of her older brother drifted to her room. Her anger reached a level she had never known it was capable of. He was her brother’s friend, that was how they met.

Everything was so easy back then. When they first became friends, everything was smooth sailing. It was like being with Zara, who was her best friend, even though she wasn’t studying in the same school anymore, except that she was with a guy, and that he wasn’t exactly like Zara. But it was just like that. He was already like her guy best friend (Because Zara was always her no. 1 best friend and no one would ever take her place).

That was the main reason they ended up together, because they were so close. And it was practically stated in the law that if a girl and a boy were so close, they should be in a relationship. She was fine with that, because she liked Ciel and he was like her best friend.

But now….now he only made her angry. Now, he was usually the reason why she would be so moody. Now, he only made her madder and madder.

Val closed her eyes. And to think that her sixteenth birthday was supposed to be tomorrow.

The first thing she noticed was that there was an annoying light shining on her face. The first thing she thought was that she needed a break up. And the first thing she remembered was that it was her birthday today.

She hoisted herself up, tiredly and exasperatedly. It was her birthday, and she was annoyed and frustrated just as soon as she woke up. And almost right after she sat up, her mother opened the door.

There was mild surprise for a moment, but it completely turned to indifference and solemnity after a second. Neither spoke up and the silence made everyone within a hearing and seeing range tense up and get out of that situation. But neither daughter nor mother moved, and neither made any notion to.

Finally, Val spoke up, “Ma, can I stay here?” The only response she received was her mother turning away after a few moments to close the door. She heard the bang of the wood and it made her anger increase.

The usual sounds of eating filled her room, and it was only a few more minutes before her brother and mother would leave. She lied back down, rested her head on top of her forearm, and tried to fall asleep.

Sleep didn’t come to her even though she was dead tired, and she rolled to the side. The honking of her brother’s bus echoed to her ears and she closed her eyes. The vrooming of the vehicle moving away sounded. And a couple minutes later, she heard the car starting and speeding away. She took her forearm off and placed her head on the pillow. She turned to stuff her head on it.

Thoughts of Ciel, her parents, her finding out, her getting angry with her boyfriend, and her birthday filled her mind. Now she was just irritated as she had been last night. Her hand felt her bed, and finding what she was looking for, she pressed a button and clicked NEW MESSAGE on her phone (the one that wasn’t turned off), ignoring the 6 missed calls message.

Guys ges hu turnd 16 2day!!!! n ges hus on my DEATHNOTE 2 his naym starts wid d letr c n ends wid l :x ~~gm

She dropped her phone on the bed, but as soon as she did, it rang the ‘New Message’ tone. She only looked at it for a while before picking it up. Three New Messages. She pressed the note and the oldest one appeared.

its mi isn’t it? im so so sory val I didn’t mean it seriusly pls ans my colls i want 2 tok 2 u

im sory if I ruind ur bday

Her heart ached with guilt. She read the message again. It wasn’t exactly heartfelt or anything, it sounded sloppy and rushed. And that was why she was so guilty. This was the real Ciel speaking, and what was written was real. He was sorry.

Val bit her lip. She shouldn’t be guilty. She should be happy, proud (that she was able to get him to understand exactly who made her so annoyed), anything but guilty. He deserves it, he should be begging for her mercy, he deserved that.

She was confused. Why was she like that? Wasn’t she angry with him a moment ago? Didn’t she want a break up? Why was she guilty?

She pressed next. It was the usual ‘Happy Birthday!!’ and ‘It’s Ciel, isn’t it?’ She ignored that and pressed next again. And as soon as she read it, she was mad again.

In the message was a sentence that made her blood boil. Ciel was flirting with another girl. It wasn’t anything big, but she was just a naturally jealous person. And if he really cared enough, why’d he go flirting with someone else? What the hell was wrong with him?

She was still confused, but she decided to ignore it and just stay furious at him. That was easier, and she could explain what she felt.

The sound of a familiar school bus roared around her. Val didn’t bother looking up from the computer when she heard the door opening and footsteps coming nearer and nearer.

She spent almost all the time ever since the text messages issue to come up with a way to break up with Ciel. She couldn’t take it anymore, and even though it’s stupid breaking up through the phone, she just couldn’t take it anymore.

When she turned on the cellphone which she shut off yesterday, she was bombarded with calls one after another that she wasn’t even able to text a friend of hers. She turned it back off as soon as the third minute passed.

Ciel called exactly thirty-six times within that time span. He also called her fourteen times in the other phone.

Her phone ringed NEW MESSAGE
.
I kn0w u d0n wana tok 2 me but giv me a chans

its only a cul of ryt? tel me wer not breking up

She sighed and exited the message. Placing her forehead on her palm, she ignored the slight twinge of her heart. She needed him to shut up, that was it. She wanted to have just one day without him there.

“Hey.” Val looked up to meet her brother’s face. He shoved to her a card and a CD case before walking away.

Val looked at the items for a moment before looking up. Her brother turned his head and said, “Y’know who it’s from.”

She flipped the card and looked at the outside. It was the classical ‘Happy Birthday!’ Hallmark card. There was a picture of two roses bound with a light blue ribbon and a cake the color of cotton candy and bubblegum. She was hoping to see a name so she wouldn’t have to look inside. There was only one person who could’ve given this to her brother.

There was no name, and she had to open the card. She saw no printed letter or anything in it except for a very short message in sprawly handwriting.

Happy birthday. I’m sorry.

A lump formed in her throat and she shut her eyes tight. She pushed the chair away from the computer and hastily went to her room, leaving the things she’d been doing open, still holding unto the card and CD.

She hastily went to her player and put the CD in. Her finger kept on pressing PLAY until it finally did. She didn’t know why she was so impatient. She just was.

“Happy Birthday, Val.” His voice screeched at the happy and it ended up sound like a-ee. “I don’t know if you hate me because of what happened. You’ve been ignoring every call and text I gave you, and I can tell you’re avoiding me, so if you don’t hate me, you’re probably really close to it.”

She sat there all throughout the first and half minutes, right next to the player and holding on the card. He talked a lot, there were a lot of things to say. His voice was hushed but loud, as if he kept the microphone right on his mouth so he was sure every word could be heard. It was croaky, too.

And with every sound that came from the speakers, she hurt more and more. And she was mad at him, of course.-His voice continued to talk through the CD.-She’d had enough! She hates him. She hates him. He should just shut up.

Her thumb practically pounded on the off button.

She stayed there, still beside the player, still holding on the card. And it was that time she decided she wanted Ciel out of her life.

Pushing herself up, her hands carried the plates and her feet carried her as she went to the sink. Everyone had acted normally while they were eating. She hated it. She wanted to whole world to feel what she felt, to act like how she wanted to act.

Nobody took notice of her when she went to her room. She closed the door shut and locked it. She wasn’t in the mood to tolerate with anyone. Her knees hit her bed as she walked backward and she fell on it. Her head hit her cellphone but she made no motion to take it away. She closed her eyes and found herself restless.

Thoughts pushed each other in her mind and she felt a million things all at once. Val had no idea what she should think about and what she should feel. And naturally, anger covered everything else and she soon found herself cursing everyone, especially him.

She grabbed the phone under her head and found that it was the one that he usually called her with. There were almost a hundred missed calls on it. He was losing hope of her ever answering. Suddenly it rang.

She stared at it, and continued to stare. It kept on ringing and she noticed it had been already twenty-five seconds. It didn’t stop when it reached thirty, and she felt like she needed to answer it. It stopped when it was almost forty seconds.

Her eyes didn’t leave the cellphone, even after a whole minute, two and a half, four, and then a whole five. She kept her gaze on the little gadget. And as if it finally understood, it rang again.

She hesitated, and the doubt grew with each second passing by. She continued to look at her hands with uncertainty until she noticed that thirty-eight, thirty-nine seconds had passed. She hit the ANSWER button.

“Val?” She tried saying something but no sound came out. She tried opening her mouth but it stayed close. And she tried hanging the phone up but something was stopping her.

“Val?” Her voice was still lost. “...I’m sorry, Val.”

And, suddenly, emotions came rushing through her. Desperation took its toll, and she blurted it out, “We’re through. Ciel, we’re through.” Then she pressed END.

And, like yesterday, she threw it across her bed. Like yesterday, she scowled at it. But unlike yesterday, there was a hollow feeling. She felt empty inside. But then she remembered she was mad at Ciel and the rage found its way out again. The hollow feeling disappeared.

This was actually inspired and/or based from a true story. I got this idea when Rue (not the real name duh) said 'I want him out of my life forever'. I thought she was just trying too hard to stay mad at him. I dunno if it's for real or not, but that thought was on my head for a split second. Some events here are true while some are improvised. And the ending here was a little different from what actually happened.

Well, anywho, I thank Ruru for this great story idea. Everyone clap for Rue!!
