Title: This Year (1/12)
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Kurt/Blaine
Summary: On paper, one year doesn’t seem too long. It’s a while, but it’s completely doable. The more one thinks about it, the more disheartening the prospect of one year is. Kurt and Blaine have twelve months to go. One day down, 364 to go.

“I’m so proud of you.” Burt pulled his son in for a bone-crushing hug. Kurt returned it with just as much force. Surrounding them are similar families; in fact, most of the football field of McKinley High is covered by proud parents and their recent graduates.
“I hope you took some good pictures,” Kurt remarked once they part.
“Of course. I didn’t shell out a hundred bucks and stay up all night figuring out this damn thing to miss anything,” Burt responded, waving around his camera. Carole trades Finn for Kurt and pulls him into her arms.
“Mr. Hummel, here, let me get a picture of all of you,” came Blaine’s chipper voice. More than happy to comply, Burt passed his camera on and swung an arm around his son. Sandwiched between his father and Finn, Kurt smiled as his boyfriend begins his countdown.
“…2,1, smile!” Blaine glanced down at the screen. “Perfect.” As soon as the camera is back in Burt’s hand, Kurt launches himself at Blaine.
“I’m happy for you,” Blaine laughed into Kurt’s neck. They pulled back, but kept their hands attached at each other’s arms.
“Thank you for coming,” Kurt said.
“Like I’d miss it,” Blaine retorted. “And just so you know, you pulled off the cap and gown flawlessly.”
“Well, the cap flattened my hair,” he replied haughtily, failing to completely cover up the joking sarcasm below his words. He laughed, “But today I really don’t care.”
“That’s right, you’re all done.”
“Yes, I’ll never have to darken the doorstep of this place again,” Kurt said, gesturing up at the school. Blaine responded with a smile of his own, hoping it’s enough to cover up the pained grimace that he really feels.
No, today was about Kurt. Today he would be content with bustling around this football field, offering congratulations to all of his friends. Friends that would be leaving. He would follow Kurt to countless graduation parties all afternoon.
Tonight though, he’d allow himself to flop down dramatically on his bed with a sigh that would go unheard in his empty house.
