fannish5. Name five effective uses of songs in movies or tv shows.
I had a WHOLE POST written, like, almost a year ago that's all about awesome effective use of music in shows I watch. Much like 23947 other posts, it's gathering dust. But anyway, here's five.
1. "Possession" (Acoustic) by Sarah McLachlan, in Due South, "Victoria's Secret." This was... back in 1995. HAUNTS ME TO THIS DAY. The song is all about obsession and ache, and that's the whole episode, with Fraser and Victoria. The score was phenomenal, too.
2. "Down Boy" by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, in Life's S1 finale. I will FOREVER be pissed that this song was replaced on the DVDs, by something generic that doesn't even come CLOSE. "I will stand for the sake of my friends." Sums it up SO MUCH right there. Life is basically an endless series of awesome songs though, but this one stands out the most for me.
3. "Boadicea" by Enya, in Criminal Minds, "Ashes and Dust." Holy shit, the creepiness of the unsub setting a house on fire while Enya hums on. It was really powerful and scary. CM actually has REALLY good use of music. "Everyday is Exactly the Same" (NIN) in "Compulsion." "The Moment I Said It" (Imogen Heap) in "Seven Seconds." Johnny Cash in "An Elephant's Memory." It's seriously good. Though sometimes kinda inexplicable. Or possibly really really ironic. Like "Umbrella" in "3rd Life."
4. "Renegade" by Styx, in Supernatural, "Nightshifter." That was the shiftchange. The "oh fuck, we're in deep shit" moment. Granted, I feel like they fucked this up later, in sustaining what they started in that episode, in that moment. But the moment is still awesome. SPN, in general, has a lot of awesome music moments, too. "Back in Black" when the Impala returns to its glory. "Rooster" in "Folsom Prison Blues." And of course, "Carry On My Wayward Son." Though omg, Kripke, NO MORE USING THAT SONG OKAY. We better not come back to S5 with Yet Another Montage to this song.
5. "Lullaby" by Dixie Chicks, in Medium, "Twice Upon a Time" / "Just Like a Star" by Corinne Bailey Rae, in "The One Behind the Wheel." Both are swoony heart-sigh love songs, and they really fit the episodes in question. Both about Joe and Allison's love, how they're meant to be. *__________________*
Honorable Mentions:
"Samson" by Regina Spektor in CSI:NY, "All Access." The scene with Stella in her apartment, after the whole Frank thing. OMG. T___T
"Ride Forever" by Paul Gross in Due South, "All the Queen's Horses." This probably counts as cheating, I don't know, since it's not, like, a conventional song. But gargh. Anytime Paul Gross sings on this show, man. Plus "Ride Forever" is very very Fraser in spirit. There's also "32 Down on the Robert Mackenzie" for "Mountie on the Bounty." But yeah, that's definitely cheating since it was written for the episode.
Burn Notice in general. It's so very VERY Miami. It always sets the mood. This is BN, it's set in Miami, and we're gonna have fun times.
Bones had a few really good songs, too. "Fault Line" by the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club sticks out in my mind. There's another one, too. But it's been too long for me to recall exactly though.
