I'm really sorry if you are somebody who's done this, but omg, PET PEEVE RANT TIME
I hate the word "lover." I HATE IT. I mean, I don't like it in general as a word, but I HATE IT WITH PASSION in this context: when it's used within the first three paragraphs of a fic to indicate that Characters A and B are In A Relationship. You know, "John whispered into his lover's ear, making him laugh" or "John looked over at Jack, his lover, and smiled."
I HATE IT OMG. IT'S LAZY WRITING. I CAN'T STAND IT. There are 2439728934 other ways to indicate that two people are involved without using the word "lover." It's generally the domain of the mediocre writer, but some really good writers do it, too, and it's like WHY.
