I just - oh man I know I *should* - but I can't quite totally just give into Tony being a stone cold killer. I just - I feel like there's something else there. I mean with Cara he's like we could bring down the government and is much more Joker than Two Face. He's her little insane anarchist and she trusts him even though she is insanely condescending.
OMG that scene with Jack at the end was so AGLAGJ!! Seriously, that was so -- at first I thought he meant oh after some other season but then I realized he meant at *THAT* moment which is so OMFG. He's lost it. He's so lost it. And mostly I think right now because of the betrayal that just freakin' broke him.
Oooo idea of betrayal is so true. I kinda wonder if Jack serving the government right now isn't a form of insanity itself, as these government agencies have destroyed him and everyone he loves. Right now, being out there, trying to stop this thing, and dying for it, is his choice of death, but there's something really unhealthy about the choice.
I think there's a huge difference between Hodges/Tony/Jack as Hodges was in it for money and uses patriotism to explain actions but it's really about greed and his company. I think you're right that Tony's empty, which is so so so interesting. What does a man without anything to lose do? What does he fight for or who does he fight?
Also I so agree with Beth about Kim being the reason why Jack hasn't gone over the deep end, even if he doesn't see her, she's still out there, still someone he ALWAYS wants to protect.
And uh, this leads to my insane hopeful insane theory about end of season that Kim's somehow working with Tony.
I feel like there's something there with Tony, too. Like, I don't think he's cold, through and through, as much as I say that he's a stone cold killer now. Because he felt bad about killing Larry, and I believe (or maybe I have to believe) that Tony still cares about Jack. But his cause trumps everything. He's still a man who knows that he's doing the wrong thing for what he believes is the right reason. Hodges, on the other hand, has completely lost that distinction. Tony is not that far gone. So there is THAT. I like the discussion in your journal, of the choice that Tony may have to make, about saving Jack or not. Urgh, That'd KILL me.
I kinda wonder if Jack serving the government right now isn't a form of insanity itself
Oh I totally think so. It's stubbornness to the power of a million. There is a HUGE death wish streak in what he's doing right now. He was ready, willing, and WANTING to die in the White House. It's just Bill took his place instead. In a weird sort of way, it's almost like the difference in the Hodges/Tony/Jack triangle is ego. Jack seems almost egoless, whereas Hodges, yes, is all about his ego, greed and power.
What does a man without anything to lose do? What does he fight for or who does he fight?
God yes. And those ping my thematic buttons like CRAZY. I want to know more about what's motivating Tony now, because it's bizarrely inconsistent for him to be compliant to The Group when The Group is responsible for where he is now. Maybe not specifically THAT bunch of people, but the shadow conspiracy, the vying for power and control. It's corruption and greed that killed Michelle. So how does he justify working for these people?
