OMFG THIS IS TOTALLY WHAT I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Holy fucking shit, man. Simon Baker ranged from SPARKLY to, like, HARDCORE MANPAIN in this episode. I am, like, SO IN LUV. I mean, more than I already was.
It could've been painful, but Leslie Hope was FAB. She was the key to making it work. I have a hard time liking her since I thought Teri Bauer was really fucking annoying, but nope, no trace of Teri, just Leslie Hope being really awesome and matching Simon Baker tit for tat, and same goes for their characters. Her calling him on his surface fwee and underlying manpain? AWESOME.
I thought they were gonna expose Kristina as a fraud, but they didn't, and I really like that choice. Like, the show is really starting to show some grit here, which I'm REALLY glad to see, because it's the more difficult question. Not whether psychics are real or not, but how resolutely Jane refuses to believe. Van Pelt calling on his bullshit was also awesome, but incredibly painful at the same time, because she definitely speaks the truth. It's easier to be nihilistic than hopeful. And it's definitely a sense of nihilism that clings to Patrick. It's hopelessness, not pragmatism or realism.
And in a way, I'm fond of Van Pelt. I mean, she's awkward and she makes me uncomfortable with her self-righteousness, and I can't really say I like her, but there's just something. I wish I can put it to words. I guess I like her insofar as she's the foil for Jane, but I think I also like the casting for her. That she's tall and broad and beautiful yet not very feminine, but not butch either. And she speaks her mind. If anything, I like that.
But back to Jane, and that end scene. The ambiguity of what happens. The ambiguity of Kristina, not just there, but through the whole episode. The parallels drawn to Jane's old career. How much for money, how much for altruism? Did she think she was helping? Or was she hurting him because he was such a dick to her? Whether Jane believes her or not, those words obviously HURT. Because he can't be sure. And that's kind of the key here. The fact that he can never be sure about ANYTHING, and it kills him. I know it's part of the episodic format where Jane has to repeat over and over that he used to be a psychic, he was a con artist, etc, etc, but within the context of the show, it's revealing that he keeps saying it and saying it, because as we all know, the more you try to convince others of something, it's because you want to believe it yourself. He has to be sure of something. And Kristina throws a wrench into that. And it blows me away to realize that for Jane, to take comfort in what Kristina tells him about his daughter would mean believing her, and he can't bring himself to do that. And maybe that's why he cries, because I honestly don't think those are tears of relief or release.
You know, suddenly I'm not so mad at Bruno Heller anymore, because I see what he's doing now. He's wrapped a shit ton of complex and heavy themes in a candy coating that is network and public approved, and he's fucking GOOD at it, because 16 million people is watching this show. I mean, god, I wouldn't be as bold as to call it being like Criminal Minds, but that's the other show that wraps complex themes in a procedural wrapping and slides under the radar.
Don't get me wrong. The Mentalist still doesn't fall under the "good show" category, because its plots still thoroughly suck, but I think there is a ton in there to be unpacked, more than readily realized. I hope I'm not giving Heller too much credit, that I'm seeing more than is actually there, but I really want to believe the guy responsible for Rome has a full house hidden in his sleeve rather than to think The Mentalist is what you see is what you get.
Okay. Meta aside:
