I had an entry that said I don't know what to do about work. Well, I still don't. Here's the situation.
I have interviewed at Cabell Hospital for a per diem position that would cross train me in the PICU and NICU. This position is $38/hour for 48 hours a month. Basically, every other weekend. This is PERFECT for me! It will get my foot back in the door clinically speaking, let me decide if I want to transition out of what I'm doing and if so allow me to transition out in a manner that is fair to my company.
The problem is, to take this position I have to have a minimum of 8 weeks orientation (which could extend to 12 if I feel like I need it) to the PICU. The orientation is full time, which means it won't be just weekends.
I have an idea of how I could do it, but I don't know if my company will go for it. I also don't even know how to ask them!!
I want to ask them if I can work from home during my orientation period, which would allow me to work any hours that I have available (which will most likely be weekends and eve/nights). I would agree to come into the office at least one day a week for meetings. I will also agree to continue doing everything I do EXCEPT onsite training. Everything else that I do can be done from home without any problems whatsoever. I *could* even do some onsite training depending on the orientation schedule at the hospital. Nursing schedules are all over the place, so if the schedule one week was just weekends, then I could go onsite through the week. I'll have the schedule for Cabell 4 weeks at a time, so it won't be like I can't map my office schedule in advance.
Once I am through with the orientation everything will go back to the way it is now, because my schedule will be straight weekends.
I don't want to be a bitch about it. I want to ask. But really, what I want to say is "look, im getting back into clinical one way or another... either I do it on a per diem basis and continue to work for you, or I do it full time and don't work for you... if this change can't happen for 8 weeks then I'm advising you of my intent to quit".
Should I try and take the position at Cabell, and in doing so make such an extreme request of my bosses? Anyone have any other suggestions for how I could work this out?
