Not that this gets wide readership or anything, but if you know someone in the Seattle area who might like to hire a well-spoken, energetic, and intelligent 22-year-old with a BA and experience in nonprofit PR and community organizing, let me know.
His name? Me.

I was advised improperly by the petco on how to care for my pet in the first place. So not only were the multiple health problems a result of that, but I had to spend my entire last paycheck, basically buying most of a new setup and for the first vet visit.
I have a pretty steady but tight money-flow pattern. One check for fun, and one for rent. The next one is rent, the last fun one is gone, as I mentioned. As it happened, I actually was able to work out something with my original vet, today, who "don't bill." I did offer them collateral that far excedes the possible bill, of course.
If there was no other way, I would have made my life far more uncomfortable than it is at the moment and sold my collateral, or borrowed money, or some such. But, I was just looking for a way to delay the bill so I didn't have to take drastic and unhappy action.
*shrug* I didn't think it was a 'hand-out' or 'scam'.
