A deranged mountain man, armed to the teeth, who promised to shoot trespassers on sight.
An icon of 60's drug culture.
A groundbreaking political journalist who uncovered shocking truths about American politics.
A brilliant sportswriter whose humor was second only to his insights on football.
A crotchety old man who wouldn't take any bullshit.
...all in the same body.
It's frightening to think that because of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Hunter S. Thompson might be better-remembered for the contraband that flowed through his veins than the insight he brought to American culture. Eternally disgusted, half-crazy, and pure genius, the Doctor constantly challenged convention not to destroy its adherents, but to protect them from their own hypocrisy. Constantly obsessed with the American Dream, he was in a way its eulogist, full of enough ire to point the finger at its murderers. He shot himself, I'd like to think, so he could go on his own terms before his brilliance faded.
Loved or hated, a great American intellectual died the other day.
