Bruce knew he should tell her to her face. He’d written her a note the first time he’d been too nervous to talk to her. A second note just made him seem juvenile. He started it anyway, telling himself he’d only use it to organize his thoughts before actually telling them to her.
Maria:
Thanks again for putting up with me last night. I’m not 100% sure what I ingested but it clearly altered me. The thing is, I felt great, and not because I was intoxicated, but because I was with you. Because while we were dancing I had you in my arms and it felt right in a way that I’d lost hope of being possible. So I want to thank you for that too. For giving me hope again.
I have to go. You and me will never work, because it will never be just you and me. The other guy will always be in the way. I want you. I want to be with you. But so does he. And I won’t let him hurt you.
He scribbled through the words before crumpling the paper and throwing it away - his second draft joining the first at the bottom of the can, woefully inadequate at expressing what he felt. Words didn’t exist to describe the conflict going on in his heart and mind. He knew what he should do, and it was the opposite of what he wanted. Until he found a way to resolve the two, that second draft would be joined by more, one after another until the can overflowed.
