Hello internet,
Long time, no see. Did you miss me? Since June, I've graduated from college, gotten a job, lost that job, fallen in love, fallen out of love, traveled by train and plane to California and Oregon, helped a friend build a cabin in the woods, returned to Chicago, and sat alone in my one-bedroom Pilsen sky-palace, thinking really hard about What It All Means. And now, after this period of chaos and stagnation, winter's ending. Some of those seeds that were sleeping in the ground for the past year or two are starting to wake up, shake the dirt off their shoulders, risk some late frost to seek the sun.
Here's what I'm up to:
- Getting my EMT (basic anatomy & physiology, medical illnesses/traumatic injuries, clinical rotations on the ambulance and in the emergency department)
- Being a greenhorn Youth Worker at a teen shelter in West Town. (Wish me godlike powers, today's my second day...)
- Wishing I could go to Madison today to protest in solidarity with Wisconsin unions, instead of working the 3pm-11pm shift.
- Singing my heart out with Sacred Harp, traveling around as much as possible to different singings and helping scout new sites for the Chicago city-wide and regional singings.
- Playing my violin with friends, my church band, the folks at Hyde Park Taize, and the mp3s on my computer.
- Reading Rilke, some books about farming and gardening, some books about trauma and recovery, some John McPhee books about Alaska and the New Jersey Pine Barrens and the control of nature, some theology (especially Paul Tillich's "Dynamics of Faith").
- Wednesday morning Lectio Divina -- silence and words to feed the week.
- Monday night free free-jazz at the Skylark -- silence and sounds to feed the week.
Here's what I hope to get up to ASAP:
- Helping Benton House start a community garden in Bridgeport.
- Building a community-based, anti-sexual-assault collective, along the lines of Philly Stands Up/Philly's Pissed. Right now I'm looking at what other groups are already doing in Chicago, and thinking about who might like to serve on a Southside Sexual Assault Working Group and what we'd want to accomplish.
Well, that's all for now, internet. If you want to play music, garden, help with the Southside Sexual Assault Working Group, talk about trauma, theology, community organizing, or anything else really, or just chill in the peace/quiet/sunlight of my Pilsen sky-palace, hit me up. I've probably been meaning to write you a letter, anyway.
Peace,
Kelly
