Movies for 2011, Part #2.

Jan 20, 2011 23:23

I watch a lot of movies each year. How do I watch so many? Basically there are three elements in play. Firstly, Sonia and I will often watch a movie in the evening - it's cheaper than going out, less exhausting if one of you has MS and less stressful if one of you (OK, me) is generally awkward about social situations and will do anything to avoid ( Read more... )

Oh, come on. Deep Blue Sea is better than Masters of the Universe.

You've got to be joking. Unless Deep Blue Sea is vastly better than everything I've seen and heard suggests, it's nowhere near as good as Masters of the Universe.

Gotta agree with the comments on Red Sonja though. Not nearly as good as Conan the Destroyer.

Me: seen both movies. You: telling me I've got to be joking?

Admittedly I haven't seen Masters of the Universe since its Australian TV premiere when I was a kid, but it's absolute crap.

Deep Blue Sea is a hilariously preposterous shark-slasher flick with a memorable performance from LL Cool J. It's well good.

I find LL Cool J to be one of the less interesting bits of Deep Blue Sea. Which is a terrible, unintentionally hilarious film. Except for that bit with Samuel L. Jackson, which is deliberately brilliant.

Masters of the Universe is also a terrible, unintentionally hilarious film, but unlike Deep Blue Sea it has these odd incongruous elements that are simply too good for the movie they're in. Langella, as I've said, is unexpectedly wonderful. A lot of the costume and set design is strong and imaginative, albeit suffering from a film-wide obsession with looking like Return of the Jedi.

Masters of the Universe has Frank Langella as Skeletor. It really does bump it up two points.

So Nixon really was an Evil Mastermind. I knew it.

One of my lasting impressions of Frank is him running naked down a hallway in the Lolita remake. This can be distracting in other contexts (although it made The Box more interesting).
