Season 18

BBC Video have finally released "Meglos", oddly one of my favourite Doctor Who stories, and it made me realise that Season 18 is finally complete on DVD. I have an enormous affection for Season 18, because while my first memory of Doctor Who is Romana being hassled by Daleks in "Destiny of the Daleks", Season 18 was the earliest point at which I ( Read more... )

I think I started watching at a similar time. While my earliest Who memories were of Scaroth and the Creature from the Pit, Season 18 was the first season I remember following the show with active interest. Season 18 marks the first of what I consider "my" era of Who (which is not to say I think it's the best, but I'll always have a certain fondness for it for that reason).

And as a kid I loved Adric and Nyssa because they were the first companions who I got to experience the journey with, as opposed to Romana who was already there before me...

Of the season itself, I mostly remember Full Circle, which I found really spooky as a kid. I have scant memories of the other E-space stories, although I remember treasuring the paperback of State of Decay. The Keeper of Traken was genuinely horrific as a kid, I remember being terrified of Melkur and the Master (my first intro to him).

And Logopolis was of course my first experience with a regeneration. As a kid, I don't recall feeling sad at all, just excited.

The only ones I've watched as an adult are Keeper of Traken and Logopolis, and I thought that, with reservations, both stood up very well. And I love the kind of mood of dissolution that accompanies the whole end of the era, the entropy stuff seems to mirror the darkness of the approaching end of the Baker era.

I adore "Full Circle", as well as "Warriors' Gate", because they're the two stories in the season that actually stand up as proper science fiction.
