I'm catching up on all the naughty downloadie people by watching two episodes of Doctor Who: the 2006 Christmas special "The Runaway Bride" and the third season premiere "Smith and Jones". (And if just one person argues that it's actually the "season 29 premiere" I will argue you to death in the comments section. To. The. Death.) Spoilers here on in.
The Runaway Bride
- This started off really strongly, with non-stop humour, running about and the brilliant TARDIS vs taxi chase.
- Then it really stumbled and fell about and wound up being pretty disappointing. I thought the Racnoss Queen was extremely irritating.
- That said, the character work was really good. The Doctor's voice cracking when mentioning Rose was good. Lance's tearing down of Donna's ordinary life was almost heart-breakingly cruel.
- And I loved that finally someone was given the chance to travel with the Doctor, and turned him down because he was unbelievably terrifying. I've been waiting for that moment for decades. (I'm aware Grace Holloway turned him down as well back in the 96 TV movie, but she didn't seem to be so flat-out scared of the guy.)
Smith and Jones
- Martha's fabulous so far. I really hope she keeps being this good.
- The Judoon were also fantastic. I want them to return, probably more so than any other new series monster.
- The plot was good, well-paced and wonderfully shot.
- The time travel gag was a masterstroke. I loved it.
- I think this was easily the best season premiere they've done so far.
