The enemy raided our village in search of the last waterbender from our tribe. Our mom lied to them to protect Katara and convinced them she was the one they were looking for. They killed her. [The story gets more concise and to-the-point every time he tells it, but it's all hearsay. Sokka hadn't been there quick enough to see, and Gran-Gran had protected him from the aftermath.]

[Sokka squints at the fog as if the memories might be waiting there for him.] Feels like almost nothing, but... [Seeing no memories in the fog, he closes his eyes and thinks back.] I remember the way she used to tell us bedtime stories. She'd kneel between our beds and rub our backs until we fell asleep. Sometimes dad would do it, but mom always said it was the best part of her day, so she was pretty much always there.

Yeah, it was. Katara had a lot of trouble sleeping after she was gone. I did, too, but not for too long. [He shrugs and picks up a crayon nub, coloring on a piece of scrap paper.] Do you think your mom would-- does stuff like that? Would she? [Hhngh. He doesn't know how to ask these questions considering...]
