Remix Community

Just found this morning -- remixy_things. It's brand new, created by amidalashari in the wake of the latest flurry of remix/plagiarism posts to go around fanfic fandom. The idea is that if you're good with people remixing/sequeling/whatevering your fics, you post to the community to let people know, saying what fandoms you write in and whether there are any limits on the ( Read more... )

Well that settles that, I suppose! :D

I wasn't clear what the heck remixy things was supposed to be, though. I was thinking at first that it had something to do with song remixes and was kind of lost while reading for a while. =/

The strict definition of a remix in the context of fiction is to rewrite a story -- from a different character's POV, for example, or turning it humorous or suspenseful or stylized or making it a poem or an epistolary story, or having a character make a different choice at a key point, or maybe lifting the plot and the characters and putting them on a space station. The jumping-off point is very clearly the story being remixed, though.

But the term is also used in a broader sense, as in this community, to mean basically any sort of "ficcing" of a story or its universe or characters. It's sort of like trying to define "filk" -- you need to use like three different definitions, from tightest to loosest, to really cover all the common uses of the word. :)
