I am making Scary Pumpkin tonight. Steve and Sam have decided they don't like the hard work of carving through a pumpkin, so I get to do all the carving this year.
That's a weird and cool coincidence...my dad was a teacher and farmer but he's also had a woodworking business that essentially put him through college and paid most of the bills. As of now he's retired from ranching and teaching, but he has a small orchard and a HYOOGE workshop on his property. He and my mom designed and built the house I grew up in, and I still have a rocking horse he made for me :o)
My mom has the twin bed that was built for me as a kid, but it's nothing fancy; just has a bunch of cool drawers and cubby holes under the mattress for storage. I'd love to have something fancy from my dad. He's starting to work on more intricate stuff, but it's mostly for his clients. Maybe someday I'll get lucky :o)
We're fortunate in that my father doesn't want to do work for anyone but family.
I'm still astonished by what he was able to do for my grandfather (his father). He served on the USS Miegs, a USCG Liberty Ship, during WWII. My father wanted to build him a model of the ship, made up the way that it was during the years he served.
Well, the only thing he could find was a generic Liberty ship wood model.
"Well, this won't really work," my father told me. He then proceeded to show me blueprints and photos of the Miegs that he found at naval museums and on-line. He pointed out the differences, and they were rather stark.
"I'm going to have to build the superstructure from scratch, change this," and so on.
Cute punkin!
