Emma the rat was seen by one of the two vets a week ago, who decided her lump looked bad (duh), and her legs could use some steroids maybe, and her lower incisors were too long. Monday, I spoke to the other vet who confirmed this lump as another fibrosarcoma. Yesterday, she had surgery to remove the lump and trim her teeth. I was told her suture was hastily done, because she "almost" died and needed to be chest-massaged, so we are to watch and make sure the bandage stays on. Yesterday evening, as we sat with her, she seemed to be in pain (eyes watering, making the kermit face after trying to eat or drink, sleeping in odd positions), but was quiet and subdued and did some napping. Today, she seems better: ate and drank more this morning, moving a little more (less suddenly) (to the extent possible with her crazy bandage), and not weeping as much. I hope she doesn't produce more lumps in the future, because surgery recovery is not fun. In a couple of weeks, after she's recovered, we'll see about steroids for her back legs. Currently, Emma's staying on the bottom level of the cage, and we are making sure that Molly doesn't steal all the food from down there, and hand-feeding and watering her.
For future reference, she's seemed eagerest about eating the egg and apple bits, and not cat-kibble or rat-chow. She ignored the cheese that I thrust at her this morning.
Since this is an all-pet update: Molly is still rotund and healthy. She hasn't bothered Emma (or the bandage) too much yet, at least that I have noticed. This isn't too big a surprise, because she's more independent than Emma.
Buder has an appointment at the Vets' for dematting-with-sedation Monday morning. They said that for this, they always sedate. They were cheaper than the groomers I called for a quote.
We'll have little Boo here for a couple weeks, as of Saturday. What with Emma's surgery, we just went ahead and moved the rat cage into the bedroom last night already.
