This totally reminds me that I need to write the fic with the Doctor and Chaucer, because it would also have Richard/Jack (I mean, how could it not?) and that would just be fun.
Also somewhat pertinent: it's often thought that the composition of the Parliament of Fowls had something to do with Richard's marriage to Anne, although what precisely it says, in that context, I'm not sure (except that it's probably more than a bit kinky).
O beauty! O glory! Pomfret scene = best thing in the world, EVER. (Except for, you know, the other awesome scenes. I couldn't pick a favourite if I tried.) So funny to see Gielgud as Richard, since he's Gaunt in the DVD I have - no longer young & hot at that point of course.
Richard II was the role that made Gielgud a big star back in the thirties -- both in Shakespeare and in Tey's Richard of Bordeaux (which unfortunately sucks. I wrote about it at some length here). More photos of young hot Gielgud as Richard II may be found here, here, and here. (My Shakespeare media collection, let me show you it.)
Also, I rarely call Shakespeare performances definitive, but I think Gielgud's Gaunt in the Beeb version deserves that appellation.

(I am nevertheless in a good mood, because I got paid yesterday. Richard may have starved to death, but I won't. At least, not yet.)
