So instead of actually working on my SAA abstract which is due tomorrow, or my Yuletide fic which is due in a week, I just spent the last hour tagging poetry entries on my lj by century. Because that is an absolutely necessary and useful thing to do. (Okay, so it does give me ideas about what I should post next in the Poetry Advent Calendar, but

ALTHOUGH BOO TO THIS:
But most artistic exporter-importers would not regard "Richard II" as an especially valuable addition to that inventory. Shakespeare's inept English king is not, after all, as massive a creative challenge as his emotionally turbulent Danish prince. The surprise at the Gainsborough Studios, then, is that Mr. Fiennes finds almost more in a lesser role.
YOU SUCK, REVIEWER
BUT THEN YOU START TALKING ABOUT HIS TONGUE SO I FORGIVE YOU

I WILL SAY THAT A LOT OF THE REVIEWS OF SAM WEST'S RII WENT ALL "OH HEY SHAKESPEARE'S RICHARD IS PRETTY SMART, ISN'T HE?"
APPARENTLY ONE COMES OFF A LOT MORE CLEVERLY IF ONE DOES NOT WEAR LONG POINTY SHOES OR (SINCE RALPH DID NOT ACTUALLY WEAR LONG POINTY SHOES) EMBROIDERED TROUSERS
ANYWAY I WOULD TOTALLY LOVE TO HAVE SEEN THIS
IT WAS ON BROADWAY WHEN I WAS STARTING MY BA THESIS ON RII AND EVERYONE KEPT SAYING "DID YOU KNOW...?" AND I KEPT SAYING "YES, I CAN'T AFFORD TO GO SEE IT, FUCK OFF"

THEY ARE EPIC TROUSERS
...of course Sam's Richard got some reviews that said his Richard's problem was that he was far too smart to be the kind of king he was supposed to be, and others that said he was clearly the sort of person who thought that having gone to Eton was qualification enough for running everything. This is much funnier when we consider Sam's own remarks on what it was he thought Richard got up to at Eton.1
1. Those of you reading this without a thoroughly geeky knowledge of production history, be advised that this was a modern-dress production, thus the references to Eton are non-anachronistic. NB as well that Sam West's opinions on Richard's days as a toffish public-school boy are mostly to do with rogering Aumerle. Cf. his essay on playing Richard in Players of Shakespeare 6.

(Also, reviewers always think that snarking the hell out of the dep scene is unusual, which is funny because these days EVERYONE DOES. Not that they're wrong!)
