I always feel a little silly commemorating Guy Fawkes, being Catholic and all. But he was born in my city of residence, and it is a big part of my childhood. That said, the fireworks can shut the hell up now.

Well, someone else on the flist said that people don't burn Guy Fawkes in effigy because he tried to blow up the King and Parliament, but because he failed to do it. ;)

Oh yes, it's a commemorative ironic burning. Because the torture wasn't enough, we must obviously inflict pain on an effigy. Explaining Britain makes it all seem very weird. Hmm.

Weird. Yes, that's it.

My neighbors are still indiscriminately burning things, which they've been at for several hours. Indiscriminately burning things, and flying the cross of St George.

Things blowing up to commemorate things not blowing up?

This country gets weirder by the day.

It never seems weird to me until someone foreign points out how batshit it all is, and then I go "oh, yes. Wait. That's kind of odd."

And you miss the other nice day in this season because you'll be back home. So no Boxing Day for you!

Also, I think Catholics have a better reason to be mad at Guy Fawkes than anybody, what with his giving the government an infinitely-repeatable excuse for the persecution.

I can't bring myself to be mad at him. I do feel sorry for him. Plus he gave us a great excuse for a fun night of bonfire festivities.
