It's a geode, with stars inside. Almost every userpic I have is that geode with something or other inside of it. It's a reference to a story by H.G. Wells called I think "The Crystal Egg" in which there were these egg-shaped stone objects through which a person could see what was happening on another world. They were originally I think from Mars where they were observed and tended by these sort of batlike flying people. One of them showed up in an antiquities shop and the person who found it became so fond of it that he died looking into it. But he died happy.

It's probably the most seminal story I ever ever ever read.
