we WANTS IT, PRECIOUS

As I mentioned a few posts back, I'm working on a casual and idiosyncratic Shakespeare filmography, on the grounds that a) I've got a lot of it written already, and b) it's cheaper and more up-to-date than The Friendly Shakespeare. This afternoon, having given up on getting any more of the Milton paper done, I decided to include information about the availability of the various films included, in case, you know, anybody wanted to watch them, and over the course of my investigation have just discovered that the ESC history cycle is now available, in its entirety, on DVD. This is, I think, a fairly new thing; I ordered my copy of the second tetralogy a year ago and it was only available on VHS.

Of course, the downside of the whole affair is that you can only get the DVDs at the institutional price, and as much as I would love to see what the ESC makes of Henry VI and Richard III, I'm not about to shell out $600, even if I would have public performance rights. I mean, what would I do with them? Presumably, invite a whole lot of people to the inevitable 21-hour histories marathon. ;)

(I did, however, also learn that I have limited public performance rights to Chimes at Midnight. Heh.)
