Otep Says Something Ignorant

Mar 30, 2010 18:25

What the hell?  Did Otep say that she could get a sex change and then marry a woman, just like that? I mean, I know she was joking, right?

Because  seriously, she needs to get a trans-reality check. Sex change isn't anywhere near that easy, and it doesn't automagically come with the privileges of the the sex one gets surgically reassigned to.

Does she have any idea what one has to go through to get a sex change?  Does she actually think you can just walk in and get a sex change at any plastic surgeon's facility?  It ain't ever that easy.

Go look at the Harry Benjamin Standards of Care and see what all she would have to go through to get anywhere near the surgery.
And realize that "I want to marry a woman" isn't going to be accepted by any counselor as a reason to get a sex change.  Honey, that just don't fly.

Let's just say though, for sake of argument, that she (I should call her "he" now, because he will have told us about his preferred pronouns) could get through all of that--the counseling, the hormones, the real-life experience of living as a man pre-surgery--and that he gets his two letters of approval to get the the surgery he's so sure will give him the privilege of marrying who he wants to.

Hope he's got a lot of money to pay for all this.  Full surgery for a FTM means top and bottom surgery, and the average cost is $17,900.  Rare is the insurance company that will pay for this.  Even though he just went through all that rigamarole to prove that he needs the surgery, it's apparently elective.  Who knew, eh?

Let's assume he had the money for all this surgery and that he had no complications from the surgery.  Now it's time for him to get his birth certificate and identification altered to show his new sex. Unless of course he's from Tennessee, in which case it's illegal to change the birth sex on the certificate.  He may be able to get his ID changed somehow, but he will forever be a she according to his birth certificate. Hope he wasn't born there, eh, because then he'll never be able to marry his girlfriend.

Actually, there are some other states that have ruled that for purposes of marriage, one is always the sex one is born as, no matter what surgery one has had. You want to marry a woman, sir?  Sorry, not in Kansas, Texas, and Ohio.

Oh, I'm sorry, was his girlfriend not bisexual? Was she, in fact, a lesbian? Did she suddenly find herself faced with the idea that she was going to have to marry a man?  An idea that made her positively ill?  Did she just walk out on him? I think she did.  Happens. All. The. Time.

So sorry, Otep. Thank you for playing.

Actually, no thanks.  This is not a game.

otep, wtf, ftm, reality-based reality
