singular or plural?

After revising someone's "none of the claims has merit" to "none of the claims have merit" and encountering a few more examples, like "none of the documents complies" -- changed to "none of the documents comply", now I'm wondering if the singular version is actually the correct one. Or maybe both options are correct?
