Personal News Manifesto

Jan 26, 2017 17:19

One of my coworkers told me yesterday that his New Year resolution this year is to stop discussing politics.  Another told me that she's not listening to the news anymore.

Here's a quote from my private email that I just sent to a friend, which expresses my personal views on the subject:

---------------------------------------

Let me preface what I'm about to write with saying that I'm not feeling despondent right now like I was feeling in the morning.  And I'm not feeling sad or depressed or scared.  I very much appreciate my friends' wisdom and I tend to trust their insights.

That said, not paying attention to the news is a luxury we can't afford anymore.  The news are significant enough and are coming at such a rate that not paying attention to them, not analyzing potential ramifications and not thinking strategically ahead, could be foolish and even dangerous to us and our children.

Right now -- I'm contacting some companies in Israel on a work-related matter.   As I'm writing them, I'm very mindful of the fact that I may find myself looking for a job in any of those firms.   I also added to my "todo" list to see what we as a family can reasonably do to internationalize our savings, so that they are not as dependent on the US economy as they are now, and so that at least a portion of them is potentially located in a non-US bank.

A few months ago if you told me that someone was doing the above, I'd call them paranoid.  Now, I think that's imperative. And so is potentially getting a "survivalist" pack ready, although I think that's less important given where we live.

Even if the news are disquieting and controversial, at best, and even if many people are assuring me that everything that Trump is doing is for the best for our country and for us personally, I believe that I must stay informed and I must consider how these events have the potential to influence all of our lives.  I have chosen to move to dreamwidth.org.
