Dentists say that root canals are not necessary on otherwise healthy teeth before a crown, but you're the one to suffer pain and go through them after a crown is placed if the dentist was wrong.
So my story. Very recent and cost me several weeks of productivity.
I had two molars, with extensive fillings, that would hurt after fillings and were rather sensitive.
Doctor recommended a crown because fillings are large and crowns may help with grinding related pressure points (and resulting pain). Crowns will protect your teeth, she said.
She placed two permanent crowns in one day, and after the numbing wore off they started hurting. Like crazy hurting. Like wake me up every night, and take codeine hurting. Like take codeine every 6 hours hurting!
Long story short, after two weeks on codeine, I wend and got first root canal (canals actually) done, which reduced pain by 80 percent, and a week later second tooths' root canals. There were no infection or visible cracks in the tooth, just heluva sensitive teeth. And my expensive permanent crowns now have fillings in them. The endododntist had to drill through the crowns. And I am about 2k poorer, because crowns and canals exhausted my dental insurance limits (and I have two dental insurances).
In hindsight, I would have done canals first, and spread canals and crowns between two years, so that I can maximize on insurance.
