Reita used to be such a good kid, least thats what he was told, but when his father finally made his 'big break' at his law firm things around home began to change. His father started working more and more, longer hours, far away business trips, he began neglecting his family more and more. After so many months of this it was quite clear his father cared more for his work then he did his family. His mother began spending less and less time at home as well. Soon she just never came home again. No note, no goodbye, nothing, and didn't take Reita with her. That hurt him more then he could have ever imagined. Why didn't she want him, what had he done to her to make her not want him. His mood, attitude, and life style began to change over the last year. He started hanging out with people he used to despise. He began getting into more and more trouble. A steady progression from petty things to much worse.
He wasn't quite sure why at first. His anger inside him grew on a regular basis and drew him to people he knew weren't good people. His friends noticed and began avoiding him which only fueled his anger more. The things he got in trouble for at school and outside of school never even got his fathers attention, and that seemed to fuel him even more as well. If his own mother and father didnt care then why should he? He went from being merely troublesome to being down right dangerous. He started taking risks he never imagined himself taking. He just couldn't bring himself to care anymore.
About a month ago things started going down a path Reita wasnt quite sure he was ready for. He was arrested for grand theft. The kicker? His own father was pressing the charges against him. Sure he had faced his punishments but so far nothing this big, with such a price to pay. He had stolen his fathers car, credit cards and cash and taking himself out on the town. He destroyed quite a bit of property along the way. He knew he would be locked up somewhere, they just weren't sure as to charge him as an adult or a child yet. Reita knew it wouldn't be the latter...he was 17, almost 18 now.
Even tho he was in so much trouble, he knew he put himself there and there was no sweet talking himself out of this one. His father never even appeared for anything. Even now, his father still didn't see how much his son needed him. Reita tried to cover all the pain up with saying that he didn't care and pushed his conscience and feelings of hurt, pain, anger, and worthlessness to the furthest place in his mind. He refused to give into those emotions and look like a wimp and show his father how much he hurt inside. To his father he became just another statistic, an underaged trouble maker.
On the morning of the hearing his father left early like he always did. Never said a word to Reita as he sat at the table eating his breakfast in silence. Reita had expected that, but it still hurt. Looks like it's the bus to court house. The more he thought about it the less his breakfast looked appetising. He cleaned up and went to take his shower to get ready. A half hour later he was locking the door to his home, if he could even call it that, because it sure didnt feel like a home anymore. Just some place he rested his head and kept his clothes.
He sighed as he took one last look at the house he grew up in. Up until a little over a year ago he was happy in this home. He held so many memories to it. As he started to walk towards the bus stop he started getting this feeling in the pit of his stomache. Sadness, anger, regret...regret. He was now regretting everything he had done up until now. Getting caught was probably the one thing that might save him. But could he be saved? He could end up spending a long time behind bars. In with people for much worse crimes then him, bad influences he was afraid he would get caught up in. Thinking more as he approached the bus stop, he knew he was alone. His mother was gone, his father practically disowned him. He abandoned the only good friends he had a long time ago, when he dropped out of school. Yes, regret was a huge whole eating away at his insides right now.
He tried not to think about it anymore as he entered the bus. No matter how hard he tried, it was just too much. He started to feel more and more anger towards his father. Did he not realise he was the cause of all this? Is he so blind, or did he never care before and only wanted a family to help him look good for his career? Too many unanswered questions. He knew his father would never give him those answers. His hate for his father grew the entire bus trip to the court house. By the time he got off, his hate was set in stone. He could never see him forgiving his father. He knew he had his own part in this as well. No one forced him to do what he had done, but he chose to ignore that as he entered the court house & found his court room.
It was borning, many people were in front of him. Mostly for similar crimes, a few worse then his. The public defender stood and gave half hearted attempts at what ever it was he was trying to do. As he felt himself starting to dose off he noticed a women in the front of the courtroom eyeing him. She was in her mid 40s at least. Long brown hair pulled back into a tight bun, and in tan business atire. Her eyes would go from him to the case currently on the floor being discussed. Reita almost shivered it was so creepy. What was this old lady looking at? Reita dressed as respectfully as possible, even left his noseband at home (a habbit he picked up running with a gang he was with), and his hair was combed, bleached, but it looked nice. Some people he saw before him had looked much worse. Like the tall, lanky guy with multi-colored hair, piercings and tattoos. Reita chuckled at remembering the look on the Judges face when the man stood before him.
Finally after what seemed like an eternity Reita's name was called.
"Suzuki Akira!" cried a voice from behind a rediculously tall counter next to the judge. Reita couldnt actually see the person.
Reita stood, and untill now he never felt nervous. Suddenly it all hit him like it wasnt real until now. He could be going to prison, possibly for a long time. Just as reached his public defender Reita heard the court room doors open behind him. He turned to look and saw his father coming down the isle. He never even looked at Reita. Immediately Reita shot him a deathly glare he was sure his father never even noticed, or at least gave no indication he did.
His father stood by the lawyer on the other side, Reita recognized as his fathers lawyer. Reita was suprised he wasn't representing himself. Probably because he didnt want to risk eye contact with him. Reita sighed inwardly and returned his eyes to the judge.
The proceedings went on, words passing in one ear and out the other. Reita nodded as he needed. Half of this he didnt even understand. He knew his public defender was only fighting for him half heartedly like he did everyone else before him, but Reita couldnt bring himself to care. He just wanted to hear his sentence, be taken away and be done with it. The sudden silence brought Reita out of his thoughts. At first he thought he'd been asked something and wasnt paying attention to answer it. Just then he saw the strange women from earlier whispering to the judge. He didnt know why, but he didnt like the feeling he got from this. That lady took too good a liking to him.
A few moments later their little meeting broke up. The judge called his and his fathers lawyer up to his bench. Reita could hear whispering, but couldnt pick up anything. He looked over at his father, but his fathers line of sight never wavered. He stayed looking straight ahead like the world around him didnt exsist. Reita felt white hot hatred course through his body. His fault, his success, his ignorance. Reita stopped to wonder if it really was him and not his father. Was he really so bad? Was he really such an embarrassment? A disappointment? Maybe thats why his mother didnt want him either. No one wanted him. His own parents didnt want him, his 'friends' didnt want him the minute he got arrested. He had no one left. His hatred quickly turned into sadness, so much sadness. He hadnt felt this much sadness since his mother left. He had to blink a few times to keep the tears at the corner of his eyes from falling. He refused to show any weakness in front of his father, especially not here.
Reita snapped out of his thoughts as he noticed the lawyers returning to their places. He looked at his lawyer questionally, expecting an explanation but none was given. Reita felt a sudden urge to punch the man in the back of the head. Fighting that urge as much as possible he whispered "Whats going on?"
His lawyer looked at him like him asking a question was forbidden but replied "It's better then prison, so I took the liberty of accepting Meiko-san's offer. Be patient, you will see".
Reita really didnt like this now. Sure, he didnt want to go to prison. But he wasnt sure what the alternative was. Patiently he waited for the judge to deliver his sentence. Now and again, eyeing the women on the left. She now had a smug looking smile on her face. Reita decided he really didnt like her.
"Suzuki-san" the judge suddenly spoke "Do you understand the nature of the charges brought against you?"
Reita stuffended at being addressed "Hai, i understand them " he replied as politely as he could manage.
The judge seemed to be in thought for a moment then continued "Very well. Meiko-san here" he pointed to his right at the women who had been watching him "has made a suggestion that both lawyers have agreed to and I am sure you will as well for the alternative is prison. Now, your sentence shall be carried out at the Meiko Hospital of Psychiatry. This sentence shall be in affect until Meiko-san gives the ok for dismissal. Is that understood Suzuki-san?"
Reita couldnt believe it. He really didnt know what to think. What kind of people would be working around axactly? And, until some strange women decides to dismiss him? What was going on, this didn't seem to be a normal sentence for his crimes. Yet, despite all this, he really didnt want to go to prison. Maybe he could still live a somewhat normal life.
"Hai, I understand" he finally said.
"Good. Also, as to ensure you will not return to the life you had, you will be monitored on a weekly basis. Any problems, abandonment, mischeif, or non-progression on your part will result in your immediate removal and you will be placed into the local prison. Also, you will be housed at the hospital as well, not as a patient. Consider it a form of house arrest. You will not leave the premises without permission and if Meiko-san feels, a gardian. Are all these terms understood Suzuki-san?"
Reita looked over at his father. He was sure his father would not let him off this easily. At least, it seemed easy to him compared to prison. Reita couldn't help but think there was something strange going on here and he couldn't put his finger on it, or why. His father still wouldn't look at him, so he looked back at the judge nodding "Hai, I understand completely".
The judge made it his final rulling and everyone broke for lunch. Reita was made to stay behind and sign papers. He was told Monday morning he would be moving into the hospital. How weird did that sound? Reita had to supress a laugh at the thought of him moving into the local mental hospital, but not as a patient suposedly. His father had long since been gone when the judge dismissed everyone. He sighed to himself as he sat down on the courthouse steps. He honestly didnt know where to take his thoughts first. He had one more weekend of freedom. He couldnt help but wonder what was going to happen to him now. If at all possible, he was more nervous now then at the hearing.
Monday morning came quicker then he thought it would. He couldnt remember the last time a weekend went by that quick. He packed as many things over the weekend as he could. Not sure how much he would need, or be able to have. He had two large bags waiting by the front door as he ate his breakfast. The last one he would ever have in this home. He planned to never come back here, not for anything or anyone. It was petty, really petty but he left the kitchen a mess from his breakfast. He just couldn't bring himself to care anymore what happened to that man, or the house.
Another one last look at his home on the way out, grabbing his bags and he turned to lock the door. When he turned around a suprise was waiting for him at the end of the walk, a smiling suprise.
"Long time no see Reita" the boy said, smile wavering slightly. He was leaning against what Reita was assuming to be his car. Long honey blonde hair slightly swaying in the wind. Torn faded jeans and a tee shirt with writing in a language Reita recognised as English. His smile was contagious. Reita couldnt help but return it despite all thats happened between them.
"Eh...yea," he began, scratching the back of his head, a nervous habbit he developed years ago "What brings you by here Uruha?"
Uruha's smile faded a bit, feeling the uncomfortableness of the situation. After all, it had been over a year since they spoke last. Uruha spoke as he pushed himself off the car and began walking towards Reita. "Ne, we're friends right? That doesnt change cuz you...lost your way. I heard about the hearing, and I heard now maybe you might get yourself back on track and..." he trailed off.
Reita was stunned. After all the aweful things he said to Uruha and his friends he was still standing here. Things were just happening too fast, it was too weird. Reita forced a weak smile and tried to encourage Uruha to finish his sentence "And?"
Uruha sighed "And maybe we can be friends again. We all miss you Reita. The whole gang, we've all been waiting for you" Uruha immediately looked to the ground. Afraid of what Reita might say, or do. He wasnt for certain yet how Reita was taking the news of everything that happened in court, or that he was willing to change. Just waiting for an opportunity to return to his old ways.
Reita sighed, looking past Uruha and into the blue sky behind him. "Ya know Uruha..." Uruha looked up at Reita trying to read his face, which seemed impossible with his face hidden behind that aweful noseband again, eyes glazed over as he was thinking "I miss you guys too" he said finally, smiling so wide his face hurt.
Uruha smiled back just has hard. His smile faded into an evil smirk as he flung himself onto Reita wrapping his arms tightly around his waste and slightly lifting him off the ground, causing them both to fall into a fit of laughter.
After their laughter died down Uruha stepped past Reita and picked up his bags "I'll be taking you to your new home. I don't know how we'll do it, but somehow, we're going to stay in touch while your in there. I'm sure you will be allowed visitors. Once your all settled. I'll be bringing the others to come see you" he said, quickly adding "if that's ok?" he asked nervously. He didn't know if Reita would be ready to see the others yet. But Reita smiled and nodded. He couldnt bring himself to voice just how much, but he couldn't wait to see the others. He really did miss them, and he felt so foolish he let himself fall into the life he had. This 'gang' being the one he should never have left. But, no sense in dwelling on what can't be changed. Just focus on what will change.
Reita followed Uruha to the car and helped him put the bags into the trunk, and within a few minutes they were off. Reita felt better then he had in over a year. Things finally seemed like they would be looking up for him. Maybe, just maybe, this was what he needed. All he could do was take it one day at a time. Knowing his friends still wanted him, still cared for him, that was the only thing that would help him through this. He no longer felt scared or nervous about what was to come at the hospital. He smiled over at Uruha who smiled back. Neither really knowing what to say. Uruha didn't think Reita would want him prying into what he's been doing the past year, he knew pretty much anyway. It's not like Reita had kept it a secret. And Reita too afraid to talk and say something stupid like he did before, and ruining the chance he might have at saving the friendship he thought he had lost.
As Uruha pulled up in front of the hospital Reita let out a sigh "Well, i guess this is it".
They both leaned forward to take a look at the outside. It was huge. Much bigger then Reita had originally thought. But it was nice, it didnt have that hospital look to it, it looked like...someone's home. There were so many trees, flowers, benches, water falls, and fountains all over. Reita kind of smiled to himself, it didnt look so bad. But he felt a jolt of nervousness remembering what kind of patients were inside. He looked over at Uruha and laughed at his worried look "Dont worry Uru, I'll be ok. You still have the same phone number right? I'll call you as soon as I can. ill be fine" he said
Uruha laughed at his own worry, and pretended he felt better for Reita sake. He was still worried tho "I know, your a big boy huh?" he laughed "Ya, same number, call me the minute you can and see when we can come see you!".
Reita nodded getting out of the car and grabbing his bags and closing the trunk. With one last wave and smile to each other Uruha drove off and Reita began to make his way into the hospital.
Walking through the front doors Reita found himself in a huge lobby. It's walls covered in random abstract art, and atinque looking pieces. Large plush couches, antique tables with matching lamps, vases and other antiques Reita couldn't identify. The floors were covered in large expensive looking throw rugs and shiny wooden flooring. He walked foward to the reception desk carefully, the shear look of just the lobby and he was afraid of breaking something or scuffing the hard wood floors with his beat up old sneakers. The women at the desk smiled as he approached, she had a pleasant air around her that made Reita relax a bit as he spoke "I'm Suzuki Akira, I'm here to meet with Meiko-san".
She smiled even wider replying "Ah yes, Suzuki-san, Meiko-san has been expecting you! Please, follow me and I'll take you to her office."
Reita smiled and nodded following her as she came from behind her desk and began to walk down the hallway that was directly behind her desk. The hallway also consisted of the same furnishings as the lobby, everything flowing together. He noticed they passed several doors but they all looked like offices, not patient rooms. He wondered where they stayed. Upstairs or in the other two hallways he noticed that branched off on the left and right of the reception desk. He also hasnt seen any patients, plenty of nurses and building staff by the looks of them tho. Reita was brought out of his thoughts as the receptionist knocked on a door she stopped in front of. This one being at the very end of the hallway and with the largest door. A sure sign of status against the other doors.
The door opened as he heard a voice on the other side. Once opened he noticed this room much different then the hallway and lobby. The walls were covered in flower wallpaper and had pictures of random people and places. There were fresh cut roses on the huge mahogany desk that set against the far window, two plush chairs set in front of it, and a matching couch against the wall to his left. Bookshelfs, computer and other odds and ends scattered thoughout the room. Meiko-san sat at her desk with her fingers laced, smiling at Reita, but not the smug smile he saw back in the court room. This smile made her seem very pleasant. But Reita refused to let his gaurd down too fast, he knew, as he was quite an expert himself, at how fake a smile can be. Reita returned her smile as genuinely as possible and took the seat in front of him as she motioned him to it. He barely heard the click of the door as the receptionist left the room. So lost in thought he hadnt even heard her introduce him to Meiko-san, but he had a feeling she remembered him quite well.
"Welcome Suzuki-san. I'm sure you know me by now, I am Meiko-san, owner and director of this lovely place here." she said, still smiling. Reita was starting to not like how mcuh she was smiling at him. Reita smiled and nodded, not really knowing how to respond. After a moment, she continued "I'll start from the begining, I'm sure your still in the dark on what's going on. It was my suggestion you come here instead of prison. I had seen your record, and noticed a pattern. Despite all the petty things you had done, you never got any more serious then teenage mischeif. Then the incdent with your father and him wanting to send you to jail as quickly as possible." she stopped, Reita had a feeling she knew this piece of news about his father was new to him. Reita felt angry again. So he did want him in prison, and as fast as possible. It hurt, and made Reita feel all his anger come back to him. Reita was having a hard time trying to figure out why his father hated him so.
Meiko-san seemed to have noticed him stiffen at these words and cleared her throat to continue "Suzuki-san" she said, voice more pleasant with a hint of understanding "I'm afraid i cannot tell you why your father wanted you so badly to go to jail, I myself was shocked he didn't object. My theory is that either way you were gone from his home. Yes, I've read into your file as much as possible and gained as much info as possible. I'm sorry if you feel I pryed into your business" she stopped, expecting Reita to respond to any of this in some way. But Reita was a little numb from the info and the anger that was brought back to his thoughts. He just stayed silent as she continued once again. "So, naturally when I read your case I wanted to help, in some way. So I took my chances and asked the judge for a favor, I owe him one, but he granted me my wish and as you saw, went over it with the lawyers. And, so, here you are. All the conditions tacked onto this, the house arrest, monitoring, all the judges idea. I want you to feel safe and comfortable here. You will be doing odd jobs around here, who ever needs you and when. However, your main focus will be a speicific patient I have." she stopped, seeing Reita raise an eyebrow at this new development.
"Patient? I didnt know I would be working directly with any patients" Reita said, trying not to let on how nervous he was.
Meiko-san simply smiled and continued "Yes, I understand that. But that patient is half the reason you are here. You are the same age, and share some of the same qualities. Except this patient has been traumatised somehow in his childhood. He wont speak, he refuses to say a word. Most of the time he sits alone, reading or whatever he likes at the time. He wont let anyone touch him, not even the slightest. He severly injured one of our male nurses just last week because he got too close. Be warned, he may be small, but don't let that fool" she chuckled.
Reita didn't seem to find anything funny tho. So basically he was to babysit some horror struck kid and do what?
"So..." he began, with a some what confused look on his face "what am I suppose to do with this patient? I'm not experienced or educated in this kind of stuff".
As he thought she was about to answer the door behind them opened. Meiko-san got out of her chair as Reita turned in his seat.
There, standing in the doorway to the office was a young man, about Reita's age with jet black hair, wearing what looked to be a standard hospital gown. The boy looked at Reita and his eyes got big. Why, Reita didnt know, maybe it was his noseband. He probably shouldnt have worn it but it was such a habbit and no one told him to take it off. His eyes were a beautiful brown, skin white and smooth looking. The hospital gown really didnt do him justice, Reita thought the boy was very attractive. Meiko-san motioned for the boy to come closer, as he did his eyes slowly left Reita's and started looking at the floor.
"Suzuki-san, I'd like for you to meet Matsumoto Takanori. He is the one I was telling you about. Takanori, say hi to Akira." Meiko-san's voice was even mroe different, almost sounding as if she were speaking to a child. Reita decided that he wouldnt follow that example. Knowing he didnt talk, Reita stood slowly and walked over to Takanori and presented his hand even tho he didnt think the boy woulld take it.
To Reita and Meiko-san's suprise Takanori raised his hand and gently took Reita's hand in his. His skin was soft and his touch was so light Reita barely felt it. Reita could almost swear he saw him blush slightly. His face looking down too far for him to see clearly. But as soon as Reita could register anything else the boy withdrew his hand and continued to stare at the floor. Meiko-san gave Reita a suprised yet encouraging smile.
