Still Day 1
Jensen led Jared back into the house his mind racing through what he would need to do over the next few days. Or at least what he hoped would be a few days instead of months or a lifetime. He needed to introduce Jared to Pauly first to make sure that they could get along and not try to kill each other. If they couldn’t get along things would be a lot harder.
When he and Jared walked in the door Pauly wasn’t barking but he was whining and he watched as Jared’s gaze zeroed in on the pantry door. Jared took Jensen’s hand and drew his attention to himself and away from Pauly. “Come” he said as he pulled on Jared’s hand and started walking towards the living room. Jared followed him if a bit hesitant at first his eyes staying on the pantry door for several more seconds. He brought Jared over to the couch where he let go of Jared’s hand and grabbed Jared by his upper arms and maneuvered him into the correct position to sit down. He got into the same position next to Jared and smiled up at Jared who was watching him.
“Sit” he said enunciating as best he could as he sat down on the edge of the couch cushion. It took a second but Jared followed his lead and sat down next to him. After a second he stood up again and Jared attempted to stand up too but he had anticipated the move and put his hands on Jared’s shoulders and pushed him back down onto the couch.
“Sit” he said again as he kept the pressure on Jared’s shoulders until Jared relaxed and settled back onto the couch. He released Jared’s shoulders as he sat back and shuffled away from the couch. “Stay” he said holding up a hand palms towards Jared in the universal ‘stop’ gesture. Or at least universal on Earth. Jared stayed seated but watched his every move as he went over to the front door. Hanging on the wall mounted coatrack by the door was a leash that was rarely used but necessary at time when he had to take Pauly into town. He turned away from Jared briefly to take the leash down. When he turned back around Jared was standing and had his teeth bared but thankfully if they were making progress as friends, or concerningly if he planned to attack, he was not growling.
Jensen moved his hand with the leash behind his back and put his other hand up in the ‘stop’ gesture again. “No” he said with as much authority as he could. Then he pointed at the couch “sit.” Both he and Jared stood still in a stand off for control and Jensen fought not to blink, determined to show that he was in charge. Finally, Jared sank slowly back down onto the couch. Jensen moved slowly so he wouldn’t agitate Jared as he skirted around the outside walls of the living room keeping the leash out of sight as he made his way back to the kitchen. Jared turned his body on the couch so he could watch Jensen but didn’t get up again.
“Stay” Jensen ordered one last time before he turned his back on Jared hoping he wouldn’t follow as he went into the kitchen and straight for the pantry door. He moved quickly but without running so he wouldn’t trigger Jared if Jared was thinking about coming for him or Pauly. When he got to the pantry door he took a quick glance over his shoulder for Jared. He was no where in sight so Jensen opened to door a crack and wedged his body in the opening, his hand holding the leash going inside.
“Hey Pauly” Jensen rubbed his knuckles over Pauly’s head to comfort him. “I’m gonna have to leash you up for just a bit” he soothed as his fingers fumbled with Pauly’s collar searching for the D ring to attach said leash. “You be a good boy and don’t attack our guest and I’ll do my best to stop him from attacking or eating you. I really need you two to be friends, okay?” He finally found the D ring and managed to clip the leash on. Taking one more glance over his shoulder for Jared and still not seeing him he stepped back and opened the door fully for Pauly to get out. Pauly tried to bolt towards the living room but Jensen kept the leash short so Pauly would be forced to heel. Pauly whined but Jensen shushed him and petted his head a few times to settle him. He had been pleasantly surprised when Pauly hadn’t begun barking his head off when he had been released from the pantry.
Taking a deep breath and straightening up to his full height he led Pauly towards the living room and Jared, prepared to step between them and break up any fight. He briefly wondered what a doctor would say if he had to be treated for alien bites, because Jared’s teeth were sharp and longer than a humans but his mouth and bite radius was the same as a humans from what he’d seen when feeding him. Unless Jared could unhinge his jaws like a snake and wouldn’t that be a nightmare.
He was brought back to reality when Pauly barked twice and lunged nearly jerking Jensen’s arm from his socket and toppling him over before he could reign Pauly in. Jared for his part was standing in the middle of the room let out a deep rumbling growl while baring his teeth. It could have been a play of light but he thought that for a second Jared’s eyes had brightened and changed hue as if they had been backlit from within.
Jared and Pauly continued to stare at each other occasionally each letting out a growl for a few minutes all the while Jensen was on pins and needles should Jared attack. Eventually the both stopped growling and Pauly looked away first giving off a whine. Jared seemed to relax and Jensen let out a breath he didn’t realize he had been holding.
“Friend” Jensen said as he began to pet Pauly who looked up at him, opening his mouth and letting his tongue hang out in a doggie grin, his tail wagging. “Friend” Jensen repeated before he unclipped the leash from Pauly’s collar. As soon as he did Pauly turned his attention to Jared, walking over his tail sticking straight out but not growling or barking. Jared just looked at Pauly for a moment before reaching down to pet him as Jensen had. After a few pets Pauly wagged his tail and abandoned Jared to go wander the cabin.
“Okay, one obstacle down” Jensen muttered as he decided what to do next. Jared would need to learn English but first he needed clothes. Jensen could order clothes within minutes to be delivered in town for him to pick up since it would be easier and faster than having someone try to deliver to him. With that in mind he gestured towards the couch “Jared. Sit.”
Jared moved to the couch and sat down and Jensen smiled at him. “Stay” he said before hurrying to his study for his laptop. He was glad it wasn’t plugged in as he scooped it off his desk and hurried back to the living room. Jared was still on the couch but he did look a little annoyed and Jensen was glad that that emotion was indeed truly universal.
Jensen checked to see if the internet and wifi signals were strong before booting up his laptop and then turning on his tv. The tv was a smart tv so that he could interface it with the laptop making the tv a giant computer screen. Jared seemed fascinated by the menu screen but did not get up to investigate the tv. Jensen concluded that there may be similar technology inside Jared’s ship from his relaxed manner to the use of the tv. Once the laptop was ready, he selected the option to sync the two devices and saw his computer screen magnified on the tv. He went immediately to Amazon, although he hated to use their service, he needed it today. He began to look for simple, functional shirts and pants in Jared’s size focusing on companies who could deliver next day. Jared was fascinated by the choices in clothing options and got up to get a closer look at the tv. Perhaps Jared’s technology enabled him to view things in 3D as Jared touched the screen gently and frowned when nothing happened looking briefly at Jensen in askance. But since Jensen didn’t know what to say and if he did Jared wouldn’t understand so he just shook his head and said “no” before going back to shopping. He worked as quickly as he could buying two pairs of jeans and sweat pants, five t-shirts, one sweater, one hoddie, a package of twelve socks, a package of five boxers and one pair of sneakers and one pair of sandals in what he hoped was the right size. He grimaced at the price but at least the shipping would be free. He had it sent to the post office in town.
He contemplated his next move until his stomach growled and distracted him. He looked at the time to see it was already afternoon. It hadn’t felt like much time had passed since Jared woke up but time had indeed passed. Jensen shut down the laptop and turned off the tv before getting up and stretching. Jared was staring at him and he patted his stomach which gave off another hungry growly. “Hungry? Food?” Jensen asked hoping his tone and the fact that his stomach gave an even louder growl was enough to get the message across to Jared.
Jared cocked his head but remained silent. Jensen could not tell if he was hungry or not and his body did not give anything away. But even if Jared wasn’t hungry Jensen was going to eat. Jensen waved his hand towards the kitchen and said “food again” before starting off in that direction. He could hear Jared moving to catch up with him but he stayed slightly behind Jensen as they entered the kitchen. It unnerved Jensen just a little but he figured that if Jared wanted to hurt him, he would have done it already or could do it and there would be no way for Jensen to stop him if his mind was determined. Their little tussle in the bedroom this morning had proved that. Jensen’s face began to heat at that thought and memory and he quickly shook his head and forced himself to think about lunch.
Jensen was due to go grocery shopping to start stocking up of food for fall and winter so pickings at the moment were limited. He’d been giving Jared broth for the last few days so he figured that Jared would need something of substance. If he was hungry that was. But again, he had limited options and cooking something hearty with what reserves he had would take time. He knew he had lunch meat so sandwiches it was going to have to be.
Jared watched him as he took out the bread, lunch meat, which was ham, condiments, some cheese, some rather sad looking lettuce, and his last tomato. As he took them from their various places, he showed them to Jared and repeatedly named them and encouraged Jared to learn the words. He did that same with the dishes and silverware. By the time he had everything assembled on the butcher block island in the middle of the kitchen Jared had lost interest in learning. Deciding that was enough learning for now and that his stomach was protesting not getting lunch constantly now he made quick work of assembling the sandwiches.
Jared was not a huge fan of the sandwiches but he ate all of the sandwich meat Jensen had left. Jensen made a mental note that when he went grocery shopping, he would have to pick up as much meat as he could fit into his reusable grocery bags. After lunch he and Jared sat together as Jensen tried to teach Jared more English lessons with varied results until dinner time. He had some frozen hamburger patties that were just a hair under being freezer burnt that he cooked up. He found that not only did Jared like meat but he liked it rare and without condiments but could stand light seasoning of salt and pepper.
After that Jensen had a very hard time trying to convince Jared that it was time to sleep and that Jared would be sleeping in the bedroom. Alone. By the time he got Jared to stay in the bedroom it was late and he no longer cared if Jared slept or not, just as long as he didn’t come out and bother him. He settled onto the couch with Pauly at his side on the floor and was asleep in seconds.
