Chapter 7
[At the Schoolyard]
“Why am I here?” Ayame asked as Pi finally stopped dragging her away to a secluded area.
“To talk?” Pi said with a smile.
“We can talk anywhere, no need for…” she glanced at the surroundings, “…hiding behind this tree,” Ayame said.
“It’s for safety purposes,” Pi looked around to make sure that they were the only ones around.
“Spill it,” Ayame said, “What do you want?”
“Your support,” Pi immediately answered, it had taken him a lot of inner arguments to build the nerve to actually drag his best friend’s baby sister away from other people.
“What kind of support?” She asked warily, “I’m pretty sure I won’t be of much help on your homework, you’re two years ahead of me after all.”
“No it doesn’t have to do with school,” Pi said nervously.
“Well?” She asked expectantly, “I don’t have all day you know. I still need to make copies of worksheets for math.”
“Yes I know you’re busy I just… shit,” He cussed, “I can’t back out now. I want your support with…” She couldn’t hear him as he mumbled.
“Spit it out, louder please,” she sighed, checking her phone for the time.
“I want your help with Midori!” He snapped, while practically hiding from her potential wrath.
She stood blinking dumbly at him for a few minutes.
“Oi, come on snap out of it!” He hissed, “I don’t want to explain to Jin that I shocked his sister into being completely mute.”
“Sorry,” She shook her head, “I was just surprised that you admitted it.”
“I’m sorry, what?” Pi demanded.
“Please, I bet even Nishikido, the unsubtle dork, realized that you were starting to like her. You’re lucky Jin-nii is too distracted by Kazu-nii, and vice versa. Jin would hurt you and Kazu would get potentially very pissed off. I’m not sure what I think of this just yet. As my brother’s best friend you must have some form of redeeming qualities, other than your charm,” she said simply.
“So you admit I’m charming?” Pi grinned.
“You could probably charm the emperor if you really wanted,” Ayame rolled her eyes, “Doesn’t mean much though Pi. I’m pretty sure quite a few guys could do that. So while you are my brother’s friend and I know that must account for something I must keep in mind he is also Nii-chan’s friend so that doesn’t bode well for you. I’m not sure if I trust you with my best friend.” She shrugged.
“You’re taking this oddly well, even if you are insulting me,” Pi frowned.
“I’m not going to go scream at every guy who thinks she’s cute,” Ayame scoffed, “That would be ridiculous and a waste of my time. I already have assurance that the useless ones won’t ask her out.”
“Assurance?” Pi gulped.
“Please I’ve done nothing to dissuade them,” Ayame frowned at his worry, “I know what people think of me Pi.”
“So you know that they think you’re cute,” Pi laughed.
“Please, I’m hardly cute.” She frowned at him, “Lord knows I could do with losing a kilo… or three.”
“Don’t you dare start with that, you’re a twig. You’ll break your brother’s, and Midori and Kazu’s, hearts,” Pi reminded her, “Not to mention mine.”
“Alright, whatever. However, I know they think I’m a bitch. Honestly, I ADORE it,” She smirked, “The unworthy boys won’t even dare approach her with me around. Thus leaving the worthy ones who will a) look past her best friend b) be intelligent enough to know that I won’t outright dictate who she can and can’t date and c) will have the guts to actually approach her with me around. The boys wouldn’t dare try to date her behind my back, I’d find out before they could get anywhere.”
“And how does Jin still manage to call you his little angel?” Pi smirked.
“Because he could still love me even if I robbed a bank,” She said.
“Very true, so do I have your support or not?” Pi asked worriedly.
“No.” She turned to leave.
“Why not?” Pi nearly screamed but held himself back at the last second.
“How am I to know that you don’t just want to play around with her?” Ayame questioned, “She’s a big girl and can take care of herself but that doesn’t mean I’ll just let her walk into being hurt.”
“Ayame…” Pi said seriously. She blinked at his use of her actual name. “Do you think that I would come to you for your support if I wasn’t being serious? You’ve known me your WHOLE life. If I weren’t being serious I’d try to go behind your back. If I just wanted to have some fun then I would find an easier girl. And I wouldn’t be asking her best friend for help with the girl. AND I definitely wouldn’t ask for your help for when Kazu and Jin find out. I know if I don’t have you backing me up chances are they won’t give me any chance. That alone should tell you I want this, if it happens, to last.”
She frowned at him, “You’re being logical… I’m not sure if I like it but ok,” She sighed, “You’re not an idiot, even if it makes more sense sometimes. Seeing as I have known you all my life I know you’re not that type. So fine. I’ll help you, but keep in mind. If you do end up just playing around with her and hurt her you’ll lose all my trust in you forever. You won’t be able to make it up to me if that does happen.”
“Of course I understand that,” Pi sighed in relief, “So… you’ll help me?”
She grinned lightly, “If there’s one thing I enjoy more than being a bitch, it is matchmaking and manipulating things into place. I’ll have something set up by the end of the day. There’s a movie that’s coming out that Midori has been dying to see. All it requires is putting plans to see it in place and then having something unexpected come up for Kazu and me. And since she’s been DYING to see it I’ll just insist that our problems shouldn’t interfere. Don’t worry Sweet-Pi I’ll set it up, but you have to do the rest. I won’t force you two together if she ends up not liking you… but there’s a good chance she will. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some duties to perform for class.”
“Thank you,” Pi said as he tried to give her a hug.
“Stay three meters away from me,” Ayame said as she swatted Pi’s hands away from her.
“Now there you are,” Midori’s voice was heard as Ayame tried to get rid of Pi who currently pulled her into a hug.
“Oh crap… bad timing,” Midori gasped, “Sorry for interrupting,” she smiled awkwardly as she stepped backward.
Pi turned to look at Midori’s direction as he quickly put away the thought of hugging Ayame as he hurriedly explained, “It’s not what you think,” he said, “I was just trying to give her a hug because I feel grateful for what she did.”
Midori tilted her head and glanced at Ayame who rolled her eyes, “Looking for me?” she asked.
“Well, actually it’s not me,” Midori chuckled and then nodded her head at the boy behind her, “he is.”
“Ok,” Ayame breathed in, “I’ll see you in a bit,” Midori nodded as she walked away.
Ayame looked at Pi, telling him to escort her through her glance. Pi swiftly followed Midori and caught up with the girl, leaving Ayame behind with the guy.
“Is it ok?” Pi asked nervously as he walked side by side with Midori.
“Yeah,” the girl answered, “This is not the first,” she added.
“How long would it take normally?” he asked.
“You seem interested,” Midori noted but then answered anyway, “My bet is three minutes max, judging from the guy’s antics.”
“Hm…”
“But it was quite long for you,” the girl said chirping.
“Eh?” Pi asked, “Wait, I didn’t talk to her about that, I swear.” Pi tried to defend himself.
Midori couldn’t help but chuckled, “I know,” she said. Pi questioningly looked at her.
“She wouldn’t let you follow me, if you were confessing to her, she might have used you to chase that guy off back then, it’s much less work than listening to him and then rejecting him,” she said.
“Oh… I see,” Pi nodded. They both fell into silence for a few minutes before he asked, “… uhm…” Midori looked at him with expectant glance.
“We’ve reached your classroom,” Pi felt like kicking himself right now for a blank excuse.
“Yeah,” the girl smiled, “thank you for walking me back, talk to you later?” she asked.
“Un… I’ll see you later after school,” Pi said assuredly but then he quickly added, “with Jin and Kame and Ryo too.”
“Ok,” the girl giggled as she walked into her classroom.
Pi grinned as he barely contained his want to skip to his class.
“Where’s Aya?” Kame asked when Midori sat down, “Normally you’d stay to make sure she doesn’t scar the poor boy for life… and because you find it fun. Where was she anyway? I thought she was just supposed to be down the hall.”
“Seems Yamapi pulled her away at some point. Found them behind a tree talking… And him attempting to hug her. It was kind of funny to see,” Midori grinned, “Then he walked me back while I left the poor fool to talk to Ayame.”
“Why would he be hugging her?” Kame asked quietly.
“Said he was grateful for something, who knows he’s an odd boy.” Midori shrugged.
“Does Jin know that she’s being confessed to?” Kame asked randomly.
“Hm?” Midori glanced at her brother, “I have no idea if he knows anyone has confessed to her. Not even the idiots who have would let it be known for fear of him finding out. Well… he has to know that it’s happened a few times at least.”
Five minutes later Ayame breezed into class with a stack of papers in her arms. She dropped them on the front desk in annoyance before taking her seat.
“That bad?” Kame grinned lightly, he hated to admit it but it was always fun to hear about the failed attempts.
“Was a flat out idiot. Why did you HAVE to actually find me?” Ayame sighed.
“Well I wasn’t going to lie and say you had died, that’d be a bit too obvious,” Midori shrugged, “What did you tell him?”
“That I barely have enough time as is and he isn’t worth my wasting the time to go out with him.” Ayame pulled out her math notebook as the teacher walked in to prepare for the lesson
[Upper Classroom]
“What do you think I should plan to cook with Kazu next?” Jin asked Ryo as they sat in their class during passing period.
“It doesn’t matter. Just choose something random,” Ryo checked his e-mail on his laptop.
“It does matter!” Jin whined, “I can’t just choose random stuff, it’s Kazu.”
“Why does it really matter that much?” Ryo sighed while closing his laptop, he knew Jin wouldn’t shut up now.
“It just does,” Jin pouted childishly, “besides I need to show him different cooking skills, not just random things.”
“It’s odd seeing you this serious about something.” Ryo commented.
“Well he asked for my help with something, of course I’ll be serious about it,” Jin said surely.
“So if I asked you for cooking lessons would you teach me?” Ryo asked, “I doubt that’s the only reason he’s serious about this, he’s never this serious…”
“Hell no!” Jin immediately answered, “Kazu is an amazing student, you’d be a horrible student.”
“Even if Aya asked you to give me cooking lessons?” Ryo pressed the subject more.
“Well first she wouldn’t do that, and second still no. There are still some things I won’t do for Aya. That includes suffering through your abuse while cooking. I’ll stick with just Kazu as a student, he’s perfect.” Jin smiled.
Ryo scoffed, “I highly doubt he’s perfect.”
“He is. He’s very attentive, a quick learner, he’s fun to be around, he’s really eager to learn, he’s calm, he has a nice smile, he gets embarrassed when he doesn’t do something correctly, and he’s just so cute when he does something correct,” Jin smiled goofily.
Ryo palmed his face, “You’re such an idiot you know?”
“What do you mean?” Jin frowned at Ryo. “I’m not an idiot…”
“If you can’t even see that… some of those traits don’t even make him a good… augh whatever!” Ryo gave up, “I need a less oblivious friend.”
