Chapter 3

[Next Morning: School]

Ayame kept looking at the clock with a frown, willing the numbers to change faster.

/Staring won’t make class end sooner, believe me I tried/

Ayame was briefly distracted by Midori when the bell rang, signaling lunch period.

“Kazu-nii you’re coming right?” Ayame asked, gathering the bento she had with her.

“Coming where?” Kame asked blankly, Ayame glared at Midori.

/We’ll be there in 5, go ahead first, gomen~~/

Midori smiled at Ayame as she lowered her head in apology, Ayame shook her head as she knew that Midori had forgotten to tell Kame about the lunch date. She sighed as she walked out of the room. Kame was confused as to why Ayame had become unhappy.

“What was she talking about?” Kame asked his sister.

“We’re going to have lunch with Ayame at the school yard,” Midori answered as she quickly grabbed Kame’s arm before anyone else could and dragged him towards the school yard.

“But… I didn’t bring--,”

“I have it right here!” Midori showed the bento boxes in her hands, Kame blinked as he had no idea since when had Midori made them. Wait, Midori made them? He blinked a few times.

As if knowing what her brother was thinking, she turned and assured him, “No worries, this was made by Lisa-san, since I asked her early this morning.”

“So… that was the reason for your dark eye-bags and the unusual early appearance in the morning,” Kame finally understood why Midori was up before he was.

“Well, at least I finished half of the project,” she said.

“What about the other half?” He asked worriedly.

“I’ll do it later,” she answered happily, Kame couldn’t help but palm his face; his sister always took things lightly and carelessly. Sometimes he wondered how she was able to pass all of her classes with a pretty high grade. It just freaked him out somehow.

They both started to exit the classroom and headed towards the school yard. From afar, Kame saw Ayame sitting next to a figure who was ruffling her hair, squinting his eyes a little bit more, he recognized Jin was the one next to Ayame. Along with the two of them was another two guys.

“Midori,” Kame tugged on the girl’s sleeve, “I thought it was only Jin and Ayame,” Kame said.

Midori looked towards where Kame pointed his finger at, “Ooo… I think they are Jin-nii’s friends,” the girl answered.

“So are we having lunch with them?” Kame asked again.

“Nothing wrong with it,” Midori said.

“Hm…” Kame nodded as he followed the girl to where the others were.

“Finally,” Ayame said upon seeing Midori and Kame, “what took you so long?” she narrowed her eyes.

“Not me,” Midori said, raising her hands in the air, dropping the bento in the process. Luckily, Kame was faster at catching them on time.

“You’re so clumsy,” Ayame said with defeated tone.

“Gomen,” Midori said as she repositioned her glasses and sat down next to Ayame, Kame followed as he sat next to his sister.

“Jin, I thought it was just going to be the four of us,” Ayame whined and glared at the two tag-alongs, “Do you two not have a life outside of nii-chan’s life?”

“Sorry!” Jin immediately apologized, “They insisted that they had to come.”

Ayame sighed, “You need less clingy friends. It’s not your fault though, you’re just so good looking and awesome you attract these types.”

“Hey, birdie, we’re not clingy!” Pi immediately responded.

“Stop calling me birdie! Who gave you permission for that? I definitely didn’t, Jin did you? I swear…” She began to fume.

“Don’t look at me,” Jin scooped some rice up into his mouth.

“We don’t need your permission, or your brother’s permission,” Ryo scoffed only to be hit in the head, “Ouch! Jin tell your sister she’s not allowed to do that!”

Jin just grinned and his baby sister hit his friend, again, “Allowed? Ryo I’m not telling my baby-sister she can’t do anything unless I don’t approve of it.  Aya, no dating, no sex, no boys, or girls in a romantic sense for that matter either, that’s all you’re not allowed to do.” He smiled happily then he quickly added, “And nothing illegal.”

Kame just shook his head while sighing. Jin glanced over at the younger boy before Pi grabbed his attention again.

“Aya-birdie, introduce us to your friends,” Pi grinned.

“And have you badger them!” She accused, “No, go away.”

“Aya,” Midori laughed lightly.

“Fine, this is Kamenashi Midori and Kazuya, I’m sure, seeing as they have an intelligence level, they will have nothing to do with you Yamashita or you Nishikido,” she went back to her bento, “Jin, this is super yummy!”

“Eh, Jin made the bento today?” Midori immediately leaned over Ayame to look at the two bento with wide eyes, “Kazu-nii~ Jin-nii is trying to make me look bad!” She stole Ayame’s bento to show it to Kame.

“Hey!” Ayame pouted trying to snatch it back.

Jin chuckled as he offered Ayame one of his inari, “Here, your favorite.”

“Whoa,” Kame's eyes also widened, “I’m jealous, I can’t cook very well at all, Lisa-san always takes care of everything. She won’t teach me either, claiming that it’s her job to cook, not mine."

“Really?” Ayame took the bento back from Kame, “Oooh! I know, why don’t you teach Kazu-nii how to cook some dishes Nii-chan?”

“Hm?” Jin was hitting Ryo’s hand to keep him from stealing his slice of cake.

“Mou~ Jin pay attention when I’m talking,” Ayame sighed, “I was saying, you should give Kazu-nii cooking lessons! I’m sure Kohaku-chan won’t mind letting you two use the big kitchen area.”

Jin glanced over at Kame, who was shooting worried looks at Ayame, “I don’t mind at all. Who knows we could have a lot of fun,” he laughed lightly, “What days are good for you?”

“Really?” Kame asked in shock, “Um… Saturdays and Sundays are good… other than that Wednesday is the only other good day because I have baseball practice the other days. But only if those days work for you,” He added the last bit on hurriedly.

“Perfect,” Jin grinned, “I’m free the same days, soccer practice at all. Why don’t you two come home with Ayame and me today then?”

“Can we come and watch?” Pi asked immediately.

“No! Get your own lives!” Ayame shouted leaning across her brother to look the two unwanted guests in the eyes, “Na… Jin I’m gonna call Kohaku to tell her about today, I’ll be right back,” She jumped up and headed into the distance to make the call.

“I wouldn’t peg you as someone able to cook,” Ryo grumbled as he finally stole a piece of cake from the whole cake that sat in a container next to Jin.

“Well…” Jin frowned, “Right after mom and dad died things were a huge mess at home. All the adults, including the cook, were busy helping make preparations in our stead so I cooked for Aya and myself and…” he trailed off lightly.

The whole place suddenly fell silent; Kame and Midori looked at each other as they both didn’t know what to do, since they both had never experienced the loss of both parents. They were raised by a single mom, but that was about it, just without a dad; they could still visit their father whenever they pleased.

“Sorry…” Kame suddenly said, Jin turned to him with a look full of questioning look, “…to make you bring up those sad memories,” Kame explained afterward. Jin laughed as he tried to brush away the dark atmosphere.

“No, it should be me,” Jin said, “I shouldn’t bring it up,” he bowed his head.

Ayame came back from making the call, “What are you two apologizing about?” she asked.

“They’re just being their emo selves,” Midori said as she chuckled.

“That’s not funny, Midori,” Ayame said as she rolled her eyes.

“Aya, she hasn’t slept at all since last night,” Kame chimed in, trying to explain Midori’s randomly weird comments whenever she didn’t have enough sleep.

“I see,” Ayame nodded in understanding, “are you sure you can finish your other half of the project today after school?” Ayame asked warily, she remembered last time how Midori was having a total crap time with her paper, the result of no sleep for over 48 hours.

“Yeah, of course,” Midori assured as she pushed her glasses up again.

“I don’t trust you at all,” Ayame said, “Whenever you wear those hideous glasses to cover your eye-bags, it always means no good,” Ayame logically explained.

“They’re not hideous,” Midori pouted.

“Yeah, they aren’t,” Ayame rolled her eyes, “They’re just a freaking black, thick frame with 2 inch thick lenses, that’s all.”

“Ayame~~~” Midori whined, “Nii-chan, they’re not hideous right?” Midori turned to Kame and whined at him. Kame only laughed because he had to agree with Ayame that the glasses were hideous but knowing his sister, her choice could be weird sometimes, and her habit of never showing her face at school, always hiding it behind the thick lens.

“Wait,” Kame noticed something in the girls’ conversation, “hold on, you are going to stay behind?” Kame asked Midori, who just nodded.

“I have the other half to finish and also I need more sources and information, PLUS I don’t want to get skinned by the devil here,” Midori pointed at Ayame with her sweet smile.

“Oh please, that smile and that comment do not fit!” Ayame said as she swatted Midori’s hand away.

“Do you want me to stay behind with you?” Kame offered, “It’s dangerous to stay out late, you know,” he added.

“No need to, you can just head to the Akanishi Mansion, when I’m done, I’ll be heading there too. I promise,” she said with a smile.

“Ok,” Kame nodded as he packed his empty box. Jin widened his eyes at Kame’s quick decision.

“You let her stay out late by herself?” Jin asked as he was surprised at Kame’s carelessness with his sister.

“She’s big enough to take care of herself,” he answered.

“But…” Jin hesitated, “it might be dangerous… I don’t mind staying behind and waiting with you guys,” he suggested.

“It’s ok, Akanishi-san,” Kame said, “Also, I believe my baby sister knows how to take care of herself,” Kame smiled. Midori nodded at this.

“Nii-chan,” Ayame said, “no one is as protective as you,” the girl chuckled.

“I just don’t want to lose you, Aya,” Jin said.

“I know,” the girl replied with a sad smile. After their parents died, Jin had been very protective of her. He was afraid that he would lose her just like how he lost their parents.

Ayame sighed, knowing she was going to regret it but opened her mouth anyway, “Yamashita, Nishikido,” She snapped, “You’re staying behind at school until we’re done. So Nii-chan won’t worry too much.”

“What?” Ryo instantly snapped, “Jin, I am NOT babysitting for you!”

“It won’t be too bad,” Pi grinned lightly, “They’ll be studying so we can do whatever we want. We just have to stay in the same building as them, right Jin?”

Jin frowned, “Fine,” he huffed, “You two, stay within earshot of the girls, or else.” His eyes narrowed dangerously at the two.

Ryo sighed, knowing he wasn’t getting out of babysitting, “Can you at least work in the library? I can work on my research then too.”

“Fine,” Ayame said shortly before turning to Midori and Kame, “Do you guys want some cake? I made it last night for lunch today.”

“Oooh!”Midori immediately plucked a piece from the plastic container, “Thanks Aya, you always know what to make.”

“Jin-nii actually bribed me with the bento today so I would make the cake,” Ayame smiled lightly.

“I didn’t only do it for chocolate cake,” Jin whined, “It’s because I love you soooo much.”

Ayame smiled and gave him a kiss on the cheek, “And that’s why I put up with you.”

Kame quietly thanked Ayame for the cake as he slowly ate it, in comparison to his sister who quickly inhaled the cake.

Ayame sighed, “Yamashita you can have a slice, it’s only fair since the idiot stole a slice earlier,” she offered a piece to the older boy.

“Eh!” Pi looked at her shocked, “Thank you Aya-birdie, nice to see you can be nice to someone other than your nii-chan.”

“Don’t make me take the cake back,” She warned before checking her phone, “We only have ten minutes left until class. I’m going to head back first, I’ll see you later tonight Nii-chan. I’ll have Akira come pick us up after school,” she gave him a quick hug before standing up.

“Why are you heading in so early?” Jin frowned.

“Actually, Kazu-nii should probably come too. I need to talk to our homeroom teacher about the upcoming activities,” Ayame sighed.

“Oooh,” Midori hummed, “Well, good luck class representatives.”

“You were made class rep?” Jin asked with wide eyes.

“The new term only just started,” Ayame rolled her eyes, “I hardly thought it was important enough to tell you.”

“But Aya,” Jin whined, “That’s awesome! I’m getting Kohaku to make your favorite.”

Ayame smiled brightly before dragging Kame up towards their classroom.

Midori looked at Jin carefully, “Make sure my brother doesn’t get hurt during cooking. He can be a bit…clumsy in that area,” she sighed and packed up her things, “I should head up too. I need to find my references again. Thank you for eating lunch with us Jin-nii.”

Jin grinned at her, “Anytime Midori. Maybe we should make it a weekly thing.”

“That would be fun,” Midori pushed her glasses back up before hurrying off to the library.
