In a world where racism is finally being confronted after centuries of corrupting our society, especially in such cases as
Madame Butterfly and the final triumph going on over the highly offensive University of Illinois mascot, Chief Illiniwek, I think it is high time to delete another racist icon that tarnishes our country: the
mascot of the University of Notre Dame.
As one of Irish heritage myself, I am amazed that such an obviously offensive symbol has been allowed to stand for so long. Firstly, simply the way it is drawn degrades all persons of Irish blood: the small stature, along with long arms akin to that of a monkey and a broad, nearly Neaderthalish head all suggest stupidity. The stance, one of a boxer ready for a fight, seems to insist that all Irish are a violent, tempermental people. It brings back memories of incredibly racist 19th century
political cartoons.
In addition to the fact that this racist symbol is broadcast not only just in athletics but across the country in thousands of jerseys, toys, posters, and other merchandise, the nature of the University itself adds to the stereotyping of the Irish: the school is openly Roman Catholic. This is of course a terrible blow to the Irish of other faiths, especially the Protestants, by portraying all things Irish as being all Catholic as well. So here is my plea, my friends: that we fight the good fight and once and for all wipe out this injustice against the Irish race.
In other news, I mock because I care (and you are lucky I stopped myself from doing this in netspeak).
