Chapter4 Chapter 5: THE INTERVENTION: Making Yamapi make a decision
Matsujun could only heave a resigned sigh as he watched the five men evoke chaos into his usually tidy living room; magazines scattered all over the center table, CD collection jumbled, and even his set of mangas mixed up.
A few minutes after they started eating, (Gussan’s cooking having greatly improved since becoming a father) Yamapi came around. And if he was as shocked as the apartment’s owner at the sight of the other four men (well, maybe three since he was half-expecting to see Toma there), he did not let it show. He simply dug into the food and started conversing with the others, not at all looking like a man with a big problem. The others, for their part, did not show any hint that they know at least part of his problems.
But when they all started fooling around after dinner, and especially when Tackey had produced another wine bottle (from his wine cellar of course), Matsujun knew that things are bound to get serious.
“My stomach still hurts you know!” Yamapi complained good-naturedly, deflecting with his arm the throw pillow Toma was aiming at his lower torso.
“So?” Toma laughed. “Count yourself lucky that it was me and not Shun, because I’m pretty sure Shun wouldn’t care if your face is all puffed up for your shooting. He’d hit you where it shows.”
Yamapi snorted but Matsujun knew that he knew that Toma was saying the truth. He was about to say that Yamapi is even luckier since Shun had to be in Osaka for a few more days for his movie, giving time for Yamapi to set things straight, when he noticed Ryo stepping away from the group and towards the balcony for a smoke. He already knew it was a pretense before he noticed the younger man heave a big sigh.
“Clear night…” Matsujun said, stepping next to Ryo, both their eyes trained on the not so distant lights of central Tokyo.
“Yeah… Nice view, too…”
“What are you doing here, Ryo?”
Amongst the reasons of the five Johnny’s present in his apartment, Ryo was the one he was not sure off. Yamapi, well, Yamapi needed his advice on something (although why him, he was not sure), and Toma just wants to know what his best friend is going through. Tackey would most probably be curious of his favorite kouhai’s predicament. Gussan’s probably there for support purposes. Ryo’s, however, he was not sure off.
Ryo snorted, raising an eyebrow. “I came to help Gussan, of course! You think those two would help Gussan cook without burning your kitchen down?”
Ryo had a point. Only a handful of people did Matsujun trust his kitchen with even amongst his friends (Nino and Ohno are the only ones in Arashi he’d leave his kitchen with…). Gussan may not be the best cook amongst them, but he’d already confirmed that it is safe for him to leave his kitchen in Gussan’s hands. But still, he smirked.
“I’m pretty sure you didn’t get yourself dragged here just for the sake of saving my kitchen…” he said, looking at his kouhai at the corner of his eye.
Ryo sighed, turning around to watch the others in the living room. When Matsujun glanced back, he saw them heartily laughing at something Toma was saying, the serious talk had not yet started.
“I just needed to know…” Ryo said.
Matsujun looked at him curiously. He didn’t need to talk, knowing that Ryo had started opening up when he said those words.
“When those things happened with Uchi and Kusano, I felt really lost. It felt like I should have been prepared for it, you know. I know there was nothing I could have done to stop what had happened, but it felt like I should have been forewarned…” Ryo said with a bitter smile.
Matsujun remained silent, knowing there was nothing he could say. He knew that while everyone else in NewS and Kanjani8 felt the pain of being left, Ryo felt the pain twice for being a member of both groups.
“This time, I just wanted to know…” Ryo continued. “This thing with Pi right now, whatever happens, would be big. It would affect every member no matter how things go. And I want to be able to understand it while it is happening, not only to find out when all is said and done.”
“If he says he’ll go public with Maki-chan, would you oppose?” Matsujun asked after a while.
Ryo smiled. “Of course not, if he wants to, then he should. Every man has a right to have a family and be happy, even a Johnny…” then he laughed. “Although the way I see it, Pi is facing plenty of obstacles before he could attain that happiness.”
Matsujun had to agree. When he went to Maki’s place the day before, he didn’t have any concrete plans (and even if he had, it all flew away when Mao opened the door) just that he wanted to see how she’s doing. He was able to confirm Yamapi’s statement about her condition when he noticed plenty of fruits on her kitchen counter and saw milk containers filling her fridge, not to mention that Keiko (arriving a few minutes after he did) was bringing in some vitamins he knew (from his sister) were for expecting mothers.
“I knew one of the Johnny’s would be sent here…” Keiko laughed as they seated themselves in Maki’s living room. Maki took the sofa while he and Keiko took the single-seaters, Mao having already excused herself to Maki’s kitchen. “Guess Cyzo’s created quite an uproar huh?”
Matsujun laughed, looking at Maki though he continued glancing towards the kitchen at Mao every now and then.
“You can say that…” he said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if the others had contacted Maki-chan already…”
“Oh they have…” Maki smiled, appearing nonchalant about the issue. “I think Shun-kun and every Johnny I know sent me a message already!”
“Figures…” he smiled, an idea suddenly striking him. “Were you actually with Toma two months ago?”
“Don’t you remember?” Maki laughed. “He dragged me when he met you guys for a drink…”
“It was that night?!” he said, feigning shock. “I guess no one saw Yamapi driving you home that night then, or it might be his name Cyzo would be mentioning as the father..”
Matsujun did not fail to notice Maki paling when he said that. In fact, she had blanched the moment Yampi’s name was mentioned, then turned red, and then switched her actress-mode on, pretending as if nothing was mentioned at all.
Maki was indeed avoiding Yamapi and that would be a big problem.
But remembering how confused Yamapi was when he said he didn’t know what to do, a confusion that not only covered what his next move would be but most probably what his feelings are, he knew that it was the bigger problem.
With a chuckle, he added, “It seems he is his own biggest obstacle, even bigger than Johnny-san himself.”
----------
When they returned to the living room, the atmosphere changed abruptly because of Yamapi himself.
“What are you guys doing here?” he asked, drinking his third glass of wine for the night. “I mean, I know why I came here… why are you here?”
Tackey grinned, taking the glass away from him. Yamapi was still far from being drunk, but they didn’t want him too drunk, just enough to loosen his tongue.
“You can call this an intervention…”
“We just want to know what your plans are…”
Yamapi was quiet for a while after hearing these serious words from the two oldest men there, his eyes suddenly fixated on the wine label. If truth be told, he’d been thinking of plans ever since he heard what Maki’s doctor said, and every plans that he comes up with always ends up scaring him. He is now facing one of the biggest decisions of his life, and that prospect scares him. But he is a responsible man, and he knew that this is a responsibility he has to carry.
“I don’t want my child to grow up illegitimate,” he declared. “I’m going to marry Maki.”
“You sure the child is yours?” asked Gussan suddenly.
“Of course!” cried Yamapi, unknowingly raising his voice. “How could you say otherwise?!”
“Well, since you didn’t actually go out…” Gussan shrugged, unfazed. Not that Yamapi was expecting him to blanch or anything, because Yamapi himself was not aware that his eyes were shooting daggers at his sempai. “What makes you so sure?”
Yamapi was struck silent for a while. The possibility of not being the father of Maki’s baby was not something that he ever considered. He felt something weird within him when Gussan opened that prospect and the only thing he knew was that he didn’t like that option. It was not acceptable. Not at all.
“I was her first…” he said, looking straight at Gussan. With a steadily strengthening voice, he added. “And I can feel it in my gut that I am the father of her child. And I am not going to back out from that responsibility.”
“You better not back out…” Matsujun said. “Since you did force her…”
“I did NOT force her!” Yamapi cried exasperatedly since even Toma believed the forcing part.
Tackey smiled, patting Yamapi’s back. “Technically speaking, you did…” he said, readily agreed to by both Toma and Ryo.
“You’re a Johnny. And Johnny’s are taught how to seduce even before we become off age, we all know that…” said Gussan.
“And since you’re Yamashita Tomohisa, who could resist?” Tackey added jokingly.
Yamapi sighed, knowing that countering that argument is sort of worthless.
“You do know what that means, right?” Toma asked, looking both proud and worried for his best friend.
“I do…” Yamapi said, lowering head on his hands in frustration. “I know I’m being selfish and that there’s going to be backlash and the group’s going to be affected and Johnny-san would be very angry he might even decide to put me on hiatus but I-“
“The effects don’t have to be that huge…” Tackey started, trying to mollify the worst case scenarios Yamapi painted. “Look at what happened to Gussan…”
“Well, with all due respect, Gussan was over 30 when that happened, I’m 25. I guess the effects gets lighter the older a Johnny gets.”
Tackey looked at Gussan and shrugged. “The kid has a point.”
“Of course those things might happen, chances are, they will actually happen. And none of us will say it’s not your fault to begin with because, come on, it is your fault,” Ryo interjected. “But I don’t think that was what Toma was referring to…”
“Oh?” asked Gussan, an eyebrow raised as he turned to Toma, his surprised tone in contrast with the amused knowing smile on his lips. “What did you mean Toma?”
Toma smiled widely at Gussan before he turned to Yamapi. “I was referring to the fact that he has to convince Maki first. And from what I saw earlier, he has a lot of convincing to do.”
“Really?” Tackey asked, interestedly turning to Yamapi. “Would that be the reason why you came to Jun tonight?”
Yamapi shot Toma a silencing look before saying “No! I… I wanted his advice on something else.”
“About what exactly?” Toma piped up.
“I was planning on asking him …” Yamapi said, pointing at Matsujun. “Not everyone.”
“Well…” smiled Tackey. “Since we’re all here, why don’t you just ask… They say two heads are better than one, and there’re five of us here now.”
Yamapi sighed obviously unwilling to do what he was just advised; he looked at Matsujun directly and said
“I need your advice on how I should tell the management about this.”
----------
“Idiot guy!” Matsujun mumbled as he rummaged around his kitchen for some snacks. He had excused himself from the group a little after Yamapi asked him that question.
He hadn’t actually said anything yet since everyone, Tackey and Toma, in particular started piping up suggestions on what he should do. They were still talking when he went to the kitchen.
“How the hell am I supposed to know?!” he continued as he pulled out chips and snacks Aiba had insisted on hiding in his kitchen for emergency purposes (a.k.a. when Arashi decides to pester him for dinner and they’re waiting for him to finish cooking).
“I think he figured you would have already thought about it enough…”
Startled, Matsujun looked around and saw his favorite sempai in the kitchen’s entrance, watching him, amused.
Gussan chuckled. “You seem to be more shocked than I expected…”
Matsujun shrugged, resuming what he was doing. “I was just taken aback. I mean, why would he ask me?! Tackey is much closer to the upper management than I am; he’s better off asking him, or Koichi. Or you, at least, seeing you’ve already done what he’s he planning to do.”
“Yep…” Gussan smiled, taking a seat on one of his high counter chairs. “But we all know you’ve already made plans…”
“And I’m going to tell him?” Matsujun snorted. It’s not that he didn’t want to help Yamapi, but he knew that all the plans he’d had will have a lot of repercussions. And he is not willing to subject Yamapi to those repercussions especially since he’s not even sure if he can handle those repercussions himself.
Gussan laughed. “Of course not. But I really don’t think that was what he wanted your advice on…”
Matsujun sighed. “Then what would it be?”
“I’m not sure he knows himself… Actually, I think he doesn’t really have a question. I guess he simply saw you riding the same tide. After all, you are riding the same big wave for your first surf.”
“Mao is not pregnant,” Matsujun grunted. “And I know that I love her. Pi’s not even sure what he feels for Maki-chan. At this point, I think he thinks he’s just responsible for her.”
Tackey had already asked earlier if Yamapi loved Maki, he didn’t reply right away. But when he did look up, he said something else.
“I’m that baby’s father. That’s all that matters right now.”
“Well, you had a better standing on your surf board; Pi is… he’s caught somewhere between going for a firm stand or just falling back into the ocean and simply letting his surf board float away,” Gussan smiled. “But, at least, that is a start… You both have very special surf boards, if I may say so myself.”
Matsujun snorted at the comparison. “How about you? What happened on your first wave?”
“Oh no…” Gussan laughed, shaking his head. “As Pi amply said earlier, what happened to me was different. For one, my first wave was not as big as the one you both had to tackle. After all, my wife was never my co-star in some high profile drama and movie.”
Matsujun didn’t reply, not that Gussan was waiting for his answer anyway. Gussan was right, he and Yamapi did have a few things in common. The older Johnny stood up and made to walk back to the living room before he stopped by the doorway and looked back at him,
“Subconsciously, Pi is looking to a fellow rider on what to do. You’re the one he saw… I think…”
