It was just supposed to be another day, no matter that it’s a Saturday and there’re no classes or work to go to. Really, it was just supposed to be another random day.

But Aoi Ryosuke knew that it wasn’t like that right off the bat. The moment his eyes snapped opened, he knew that it was going to be a different day, except that he just wasn’t sure if that was different good or bad. Also, he may or may not have come in terms with the whole idea of why the day is different himself.

Which is why he wasn’t supposed to be entirely surprised when a familiar voice suddenly spoke from behind him; but he still was.

“A teacher, even a former one at that, should never feel this nervous about meeting out a former student,” that voice had said.

“W-what?” he managed to mutter, turning around to his older brother, Ryuzaki Shinji, with a huge grin painted on his lips.

Ryuzaki shook his head in amusement. “You’re distracted,” the guy said instead.

“O-of course I’m not!” Ryosuke immediately denied, turning his back to his brother. “I’m just making coffee. See?” he even said as he picked up the cup he was making before Ryuzaki interrupted his already distracted thoughts.

“Oh…” Ryuzaki simply smiled. “I never thought you took soy sauce with your coffee.”

The confident but entirely suggestive tone the guy adapted prompted Ryosuke to pause midway from raising the cup to his lips and look at the liquid he had just concocted. With him favoring black coffee, there wasn’t any much change in the color which is why he immediately turned around to look at the stuff he just used. True enough, the soy sauce container was disturbed, right next to the sugar.

Grunting, he turned to the sink just as Ryuzaki chuckled “Get out of there! I’m doing breakfast before you add sugar instead of oil.”

He was still gritting his teeth midway through Ryuzaki’s food preparation, barely even registering what his brother is making though there were a bit of what he’s saying that his mind was able to process.

“You seem a bit distracted” was one of them. “…meeting with Shirakawa Kana tonight…” was another.

Distracted? Of course he’s not distracted! Why would he be distracted?

Those were the very first words that came on the top of his head the moment he heard his brother’s words except that he also heard Kana’s name and really, it’s not like he can deny it, not to Ryuzaki of all people.

Because, after all, the truth is that it is Kana that’s putting him a bit off-guard for a couple of days now. He’d reconnected with her in a reunion their old high school had orchestrated about a month or so back and from there, their communication had re-established. Apparently, she’d now working as an office lady at an ad agency not too far from where he’s now a salaryman. They’d meet each other every once in a while to share a bite to eat, he’d even walked her home, and stuff like that.

There was nothing unnerving about it really. If anything, it felt great. He must admit that he felt really happy having the chance to reconnect with his former student no matter that she was just his student for a very short while. Ryuzaki described him to have become a lot more “smiley”.

And really, as far as he could tell, he sees her to be happy too. But then, the week before when he walked her to his apartment just before she went on a 5-day training at Kyoto, she said something right before she closed the door, something that shook his senses for the whole week he had not seen her.

“Ryosuke-san, I like you,” she bowed deeply, her cheeks betraying a hint of blush before she retreated into her house and closed the door. She didn’t even wait for him to say anything, which, as a whole, was a good thing, since he didn’t know what he’d have said if Kana waited for her reply then.

To be frank, he’s simply just dumbfounded.

And then there’s the fact that when the initial surprise (or shock) of finding out waned out, he felt something weird in his chest, like it’s about to burst or something. He’s pretty sure his stomach had been upset too, and not just in the usual kind.

He’s not sure what’s going on with him actually and he’s pretty sure he hasn’t felt that way before.

And with Kana sending him a message the night before that she had just returned to Tokyo and would like to have a chat with him, it was even more evident that he’s scared too. Fidgety and scared.

“You know what I learned from our past life?” he heard Ryuzaki said out of the blue, prompting him to look up at his brother.

That has been how the two of them chose to refer to everything that had happened to them before and right after they met. But it was usually just him who starts talking about those memories. Usually, Ryuzaki would just give a comment or a slight response.

“It’s that we can’t change who we are or how others see us,” Ryuzaki continued, placing a plateful of scrambled eggs in front of him along with a smaller one for the sausages. “But what we can do is to do the things that we want to because we want to, not because it’s expected of us but because it really is what we truly want and feel in our heart that we want to do.”

Ryosuke found himself nodding as Ryuzaki went through that little speech of his and not only because he had to but because he truly understand what he meant. He was just about to exclaim amazement at Ryuzaki’s ‘wisdom’ when the guy added something that made him almost gag on his own saliva.

“So after all that want, I say, if you want the girl, just go ahead and date her. It doesn’t matter if you’re her former teacher or she’s your former student. That’s all just in the past anyway!”

“Who said anything about l-liking K-Kana-chan?” he managed to blurt out after a few seconds.

“You just did!” Ryuzaki grinned. “Man, you’re so easy to read,” the guy chuckled as he shook his head.

Ryosuke sat there, his back hunched as he waited for his brother to stop laughing for them to eat. He had a pout on his lips but one time, someday, he’d be thanking his brother for this.
-----

She was supposed to be done ages ago but Kana just couldn’t decide which proper outfit to wear for when she meets his former teacher and forever love of her life, Ryosuke.

Everything she tried on previously were too skimpy, too frilly, too girly, too roguish, or just way too much until she settled on a peach sweater and plain skirt to match with her favorite boots. It wasn’t anything extra-ordinary or eye-catching but she felt that it was the most ‘her’ or all her outfits.

And even with that problem solved, she just couldn’t settle down!

To begin with, she wasn’t even sure if Ryosuke would show up at the café she had messaged him the night before. She was not also sure why and from which part of the heavens did she summon the courage to confess to him that afternoon. Somehow, they started with her mentioning that one of her classmates, his former student, getting married and then, with one thing or another, she suddenly found herself saying those words. When she realized what she’d done, she had immediately hidden herself behind her door.

It was a good thing, in a way, because she finally revealed to him her true feelings that blossomed from way back, a love that only grew even before they met again.

And the only thing to do now is go there and wait. If he arrives, she might have a chance (unless he tells her otherwise). If he doesn’t, she’d just have to figure out how to live with that.

She was just grabbing her keys and was on her way out of her house when she suddenly heard the doorbell rang.

Exclaiming as she approached the door, not expecting someone, she opened it only end up being surprised.

Ryosuke, still looking as charming as ever, was standing outside her door with his hands in his pockets and he fidgeted a bit as though he’s as nervous as how she feels.

“Ryosuke-kun!” she exclaimed.

“Hi…” he gave out a shy smile.

“W-what are you…? I thought I’d see you at the café?” Kana exclaimed and she too was surprised at how straight her words were in stark contrast to the erratic beating of her heart and the flushing of her cheeks.

“I had a bit of time,” Ryosuke simply said. “Are you ready?”

Kana nodded as she clumsily stepped out and locked the door behind her. The nerves, plus the sudden and unexpected sight of him there, is being too much for her.

The few feet that was between Kana’s door and the space where Ryosuke parked his car seemed to stretch for miles. Neither of them spoke.

His car was already in their sight when Ryosuke did something that completely caught Kana of guard but warmed her heart just the same. He took her hand and engulfed it in his.

“Let’s just walk for a while, we can go to the café in a bit,” he said as though trying to not put too much emphasis on what he’d just done. Judging by how cold his hand was though, Kana can say he’s as nervous as she is.

With her heart still thumping loudly, she gave his hand a soft squeeze as she held tightly back.

They gave out a relieved sigh almost at the same time.

“I was talking with my brother earlier,” Ryosuke started as they headed towards the park that was near Kana’s apartment.

“Really? What about?” Kana simply replied.

And if anyone would just hear they’re conversation, that person would say that there’s nothing special there. But if there’s someone who’d just turn and look, they’d immediately say that there’s something special going on, with the smile on her face and the relaxed look in his.

And to Ryuzaki, who had decided to follow his brother for a bit before going off on his own to meet Hasebe Nagisa, it is what he’s seeing, two lonely beings who finally found one another. And as he started his car, he couldn’t help but smile to himself.

He may even, daresay, describe the two of them as ‘two people in love’.
